I am absolutely livid with the emergency vet I took Jasper too on Thursday night because we couldn't get in with my regular Veterinarian quickly enough. Jasper and his sister Hazel had been throwing up, Hazel since Monday and Jasper since Wednesday. They did a blood test on both and Jasper had an active infection while Hazels results were indicative if an infection she had already recovered from. That made sense because she was sick first.
The vet prescribed them both antibiotics just to be sure, we camhome e and started both prescriptions that evening. Fast forward to this morning when I noticed that the two bottles contents did not since the same, Hazels looked like milky liquid ( what I have known compounded antibiotics to look like) and Jasper's looked clear and yet the labels were marked as the same antibiotic. I called and the vet tech I spoke with was short and rude to me and acted like I was wasting her time. I asked if I could send a picture via email and she warned me she was the only one there and wouldn't be able to respond until the afternoon. She called me within the hour to tell me that she "didn't know what was in the bottle for Jasper but that it didn't look like the antibiotic." I was completely flabbergasted and told her I was extremely upseand d could not believe the level of incompetence I was experiencing.
I threatened to file a complaint with the California board of veterinarians and also threatened that this could be grounds for a medical malpractice suit. I then called the FDA. I am so incredibly upset, went down to the office, had them replace both bottles of antibiotics and said I need the manager to call me in the morning. I will be speaking with the manager in the afternoon tomorrow but hoped I could get insight from the group. I will be asking for them to reverse all the charges for the visit, I want to speak directly to whomever compounded the meds that night and I will be explaining that him having an untreated infection for several days could cause complications for him (DKA) and I think I should ask that any further medical expenses that are incurred because of this be paid for by there office and explain that should that happen he will be treated elsewhere and they will need to food the bill. Does this sound reasonable? Is there anything I should add. I am so incredibly disturbed and my stomach has been in knots all day.
@Bron and Sheba (GA) @Bandit's Mom @tiffmaxee I would really appreciate your opinions on this and also please tag anyone else who might be able to give me additional advice.
Thank you all!
