Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Came HOME

Greetings, Lantus Land!

Our last Update, 5th December 2012

I wanted to check in with you all and let you know I'm doing alright and sorting through the stuff that made the final months of last year what they were. The Emperor, His Majesty Karre the One and Only, is doing beautifully, and keeping his BG in the greens or low blues. (His SS is woefully out of date. I will get to that.) Magpie and Henry are making friends, albeit cautiously, and were spotted having a side-by-side meander through the garden last weekend - a first for them, and a triumph, to me. Luca recovered fully from the nasty eye injury he had and is racing up and down trees as per usual. Every few weeks, he learns a new cry or call, so that we'll keep rushing right to him regardless of the time of day or night and don't become complacent knowing it was just his regular "Hey, I'm home"-Alert. He fools me every time.

Jack and I are crazy busy. His new business projects are off the ground (and off the charts in terms of the amount of time they're eating up), I'm working on several of them with him, and when he doesn't need me, I get to focus on writing and art, which is wonderful. There's a gallery for young artists down town in Cape Town, and one of Jack's business partners runs it and is interested in a few of my pieces, which is incredibly exciting. Later this year we'll be looking at publishers, too. In a couple of weeks, I'm flying to Europe to spend a month with my best friend who is getting married. I can't imagine making it through even a day without the cats, let alone just over a whole month, but Jack has promised to give me daily reports and put them on skype video. He'll join me for the last week of my stay. I'm so excited about the trip. (Initially, I had hoped I'd be able to make a stop in the US and Canada, too, but it just isn't feasible this time. Next year, I hope. I'll be knocking on some of your doors!)

After my trip, I hope that I'll be able to spend some time here again and see what I can do to help. I think of you all and miss you so very often. When I can get an FDMB-routine back, there'll be plenty of newbies to meet, I see - welcome to you all, in the meantime.

See you all soon.
Many sunny greetings from the African Pride,

Hugs,
Jane.

Hi Jane!

I was wondering where you've been! I am glad to read that Luca's eye is all better and that everything seems to be going so well for you, Jack, and all the kids. I hope you have a brilliant trip and that things continue to look up for you!

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

Hello Jane, it's great to hear an update from you. Please pass on many scritches and pets to the various members of the African Pride from Neko and myself. And hugs to you too!! It sounds like you are busy, and it a very good way. Nice that you get to work on your art and writing but still take a little BFF time in Europe.

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

So good to hear from you again, Jane! And so good to know things are going well for you and Jack and the kitties. Sounds like exciting times, both Jack's business and your writing and art being recognized and maybe going public! Very exciting indeed! :D

I know what you mean about travel and being away - soon I'll be spending 10 days to 2 weeks at my mother's helping her out after a hip replacement, and I know I'll be anxiously wondering how the cats are doing every day, and bugging my wonderful cat sitter for updates and pics.

Sounds like many improvements all around. How wonderful that Jack remains strong in his remission. I hope you have a great time with your friend. Is this before wedding
or are you part of the wedding? Wouldn't it be nice to have kitty cams so you could see them all the time? Scritches to the African pride.
Prayers for safe travels and kitty wellness.

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines, Please!

Hello again, Lantus Land, and thank you all for posting so many kind words and thoughts!

I need to ask for some LL magic... Luca, our little 2-year-old tomcat has been missing for a little over a day now. We've been on searches calling and looking for him and will keep doing that. We've informed our neighbours to look through their garages etc. and to keep an eye out for him, and the estate managers have been told as well. This is a very cat-friendly estate, and if he was seen, it would most certainly be reported, I would think. It is very unlike him not to come home at all, not even for food. He always announces himself and calls for us when he comes in, so we know he wasn't here at night either. Given the electric security fence around the estate, it's likely that he is still on the estate. Still - we do have snakes here, and occasionally a dog running about off a leash, and tall trees to get stuck in, and some irresponsible drivers (who might be that horrible minority who would bump a cat with their car and *not* report it)... I know tomcats roam sometimes, but we're so worried about him.

If you could send him some Go-Home Vines, or some Let-Yourself-Be-Found Vines, or both, we would appreciate it immensely.
Thanks.

Jane

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

Luca go home vines coming your way. I'll keep him in my prayers.

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

Sending go home vines and let Luca be found vines from us too. I hope he returns soon.

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

Morning Jane, sending some vines for Luca to be found and Luca come home. I wonder if something scared him, and he's close to home but still keeping low. He's so gorgeous.

Re: Jane Update 11 March 2013

Prayers for Luca to come home.

I tell everyone who goes thru this to set a dish of food where they exit and enter....
odds are that at some time in the night, he swings by.... and then goes back to where he's hiding. It sounds like he knows his territory well enough
not to need to hide.
I'd knock on every door and have fliers everywhere. Any new neighbors who might let him in and not let him back out?

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Thanks, Ann and Rhiannon.

No sign of him yet. We have his picture up and the neighbours know, too. He's definitely not coming in at night and then leaving again - I actually can't imagine any cat doing that, making it home from a scary/traumatic situation and then leaving again after they found back home where they know they're safe. That just makes no sense. Also, Luca announces himself every time he comes into the house. He calls out. Every time. We know he hasn't been here. If he made it back to the house, there's no way, ever, that he'd just leave again.

Keep the vines coming if and when you can, please, everyone. We're still hoping to have him back some time soon. I'm very worried and upset and finding it so difficult to keep focused. I know many of you have gone through similar situations. Thank you so much for the support.

Hugs
Jane

Sending vines to Luca to come home! I am so sorry you are so worried and I hope that he is ok!

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Luca, we hope that you are OK and that you will find your way home soon. Your family needs you!

Jane, I hope that today will be the day that he will walk in and announce himself. He's a beautiful kitty. My nephew's kitty is named Luca, too, and he also likes to roam around outdoors.

Sending prayers for Luca and hugs to you,

Ella & Rusty

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

((((Jane)))))

Last year my FIL's cat got out and disappeared for two weeks ( difference is he had never been outside so Luca is more experienced) but something scared
him so he kept going. We hunted, put up flyers. It had been 16 days and then one night at 2 am, there he was. Very scratched up and dehydrated.
They can come home.

Praying for Luca to Come Home!

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Jane, I had a similar experience as Rhiannon's FIL with Maggie. Her first year with me she was entirely indoor kitty. One time she got out accidentally. She stayed close to the apartments but ran every time someone spotted her. I had everyone looking for her, too. She was just so frightened. It took a special cage, and I placed food inside and once she set herself in to get the food, the door flapped down and we got her! It looked like she had been in a fight with another kitty, too. She was so happy to be home and headbutted my then kitty like crazy. She had been gone 10 days. I pray Luca comes home.

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

J.D. left twice for four day adventures. The first time he brought me home a dead mole? and the second time he brought me a live half grown squirrel. Both prezzies were given to me in my bed at 4:00am.
I am hoping Luca decides to come home today or tonight.

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Just seeing this! GO HOME LUCA!!!!! Sending tons of vines for his safe homecoming! Are any of your neighbors away from home? My Cleo got stuck in a neighbor's garage for a weekend when they went out of town and didn't realize that she was snooping. When they got home and opened the door, she gave them a dressing down for daring to lock her up like that. Cleo stalked home and found I wasn't there (I was out looking for her) so she stalked back across the alley and sat in front of my neighbors and yelled at them some more! Praying for another such happy resolution for Luca.

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Sending tons of Go Home Vines for Luca and also be safe vines as he makes his way home. Please keep us posted. (((Jane)))

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Piling on some more "find home" vines for Luca, and sending along and extra compass or two. I second Ann's comment about neighbours on holiday. I worked part time in a shelter, and it's quite common for cats to get stuck in garages or outbuildings of people who have gone away. The other common one is garden sheds. People open the shed on the weekend, do their yard work, close the door when they are done, leaving a cat inside. And the shed isn't opened until the next weekend.

Neko once went in our neighbour's cat door - they locked the cat door overnight, and it wasn't until the morning that they noticed an extra cat in their collection. :o

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

Oh Jane, I'm so sorry to hear that Luca hasn't come home, yet. Maybe he's shacked up with a cute little girl kitty! ;-) Sending homing device vines, GPS vines, kitty-go-home vines, safety vines, and lots of love for Luca, you and your brood.

Re: Jane Update March 2013 - Luca Needs Vines

HE IS HOME!!!

Last night, we heard him calling. He had found some way to get *outside* the electric fence around the estate. Pepita, our lost girl who went missing a couple of years ago, also once did that - she followed Savio into the forest one day by climbing the fence (and getting shocked). However he did it - we heard him, and found him with torches, and opened the gate, and he came home. He is unharmed. He seems so much bigger now somehow.

I can't believe my birthday wish came true. Thank all of you so much for your prayers and thoughts and support and kind words. It all means so much to me. I am so grateful. Thank you all.

He's home!
Jane

Hugs and scritches to you and Luca!

Congrats! This must be the best gift to the family!
Is there a way to stop him from going out from the estate again? Naughty boy!

Hi Jane,

I'm so glad you found him. It's good to know that he came home on his own. My civvie Jetzin went missing for 1 year and 9 months after he got out! We had just moved interstate, he'd been on a plane, then the removalist truck came. It was all too scary. He got out somehow and ran away. Poor boy. I got him back because he was handed in to the pound and they checked his microchip. I'm glad Luca wasn't gone for that long - and he came back on his own. It's so awful when you don't know where they are or what happened to them.

Grace

Woo Hoo! I'm so happy for you that he came home and is okay. What a great birthday present.
