Jake had a stroke

Thanks Sienne and Rhianna for advice on the pain medication for what I thought was worsening arthritis. I ended up taking Jake to the E.R. last night when he all of a sudden could not walk or stand. This was followed by open mouth breathing. E.R. doc said he probably had a stroke - all vitals are good and kidney status still very mild - no kidney failure.

It is a good thing that I had taken his BG (he has been in remission from DM for nearly 3 years) and found it to be 225 which I attributed to stress. By the time we got to the E.R. it was almost 600. The vet thought his diabetes and ketones returned (ironically it was the same E.R. vet that saved his life when he had DKA almost exactly 3 years ago). When told of the only two hour earlier 225 reading and doing some more testing, he ruled out the return of active diabetes and DKA.

I took Jake to his own vet this morning, and things do not look good especially in view of his age. She also believes Jake had a stroke. He is almost 21. I thought I would be coming home without him, but with good home care, decided to give it another day or two. Just thought you should know how things changed so quickly.

I know absolutely nothing about cats and strokes, but I guess I am about to find out. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows about cats and strokes and what I should do.

Thanks,
Judy

Judy, so sorry to hear about Jake. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: No info on strokes in cats but sending vines and healing white light!

Wow, I am sorry to hear that .. I sure hope that after a few days of good care jake will be right back home where he belongs ..

I know nothing, but I'm only here to wish Jake a quick recovery, please hang on and don't let go too quickly, cats can change situations so quickly from bad to good in no time.. just hold on and stay strong !

sending love and lots of healing vines to jake.
I do not know about strokes in cats, but I myself am prone to strokes due to a neuological conditions that mimics mini strokes. All I can say from my experiance is I do not have pain, I do not suffer, just more anxious and frustrating. I can only hope Jake is not in pain either.
You and Jake are in my prayers

You guys are the best - it helps to have so much support. Actually it was you guys who started the process 3 years ago when Jake had DKA. His then vet had taken him off insulin (for reasons I will never know) and he developed DKA. She wanted to put him to sleep to cover her error. YOU told me to go and get Jake from this vet, take him to a 24/7 care facility, and never look back. (I fired her ---!). I did exactly that. He went into remission just a couple of months after that. So it was very special that the same E.R. doc who saved Jake in February 2010 was his vet last night when Jake had to go there again.

Prognosis is guarded by both E.R. vet and Jake's new (since 02/2010) personal vet. I thought we would be ptsing this morning, but things changed. Both vets agreed that I am not the "usual" pet owner and felt that I would do just as good of job at treating Jake as they would - feeding him, giving him his meds, making sure he pees on is own or that I would have to manually do it - put pressure on the bladder - the latter of which I have just now added to my list of skills!

So Asoolty - thanks for reminding that things can change again quickly - for the better.

Judy & Jake who is peeing on his own- on a pad albeit, but doing it Thank God. He just ate some food from my hand also. So I gave him his potassium pill.

(((((Judy)))))) healing vines sent Jake's way!!!!!! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: Also, I do not have any information on cats who have had a stroke, but years ago I had a drooler "Bunny" who had had one. It was late on a Sunday night & the only vet able to see her was a local gentleman everyone in town called a "quack" I thought I wouldn't come home with my precious pooch  ...but he gave me words of encourgement & told me to gently work with her. A few weeks later she was back up on all fours & justa happy girl (*just a note, because of that she got anti-seizure meds?, I'll never know whether the stroke caused them) I let her cross over the Rainbow Bridge rb_icon at the ripe old age of 17yrs(congestive heart failure) That one person gave me 5 more beautiful years with my furbaby!! Prayers keep coming for you & Jake o:-) cindy & Sabrina cat_pet_icon

Jake IS at home - I am caring him for the same way the vets would have, but better since I will be with him 24/7 - feeding, hydrating, making sure he pees one way or the other, giving tramadol and potassium when he will tolerate it, keeping him warm, massaging him, and loving him constantly.

Judy

I'm so sorry to hear of Jake's stroke. I'm sure he feels much better at home with you than at the vets. We'll keep you both in our Prayers.

(((Judy)))
I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm glad you were with him and able to get him to the vet so fast. That may have made a big difference.
Healing vines and prayers for Jake.

Judy, I'm so sorry that you and Jake are going through this. I think you are doing all there is to do for Jake and from what I've read, it takes a few weeks for them to come back completely. You should exercise his arms and legs gently moving them if you can to keep him moving if he's not moving well also, just in case you aren't. I'm sure no matter how good a vet is, he will get much better care from you. Jake must be a tough old guy to be 21 yrs. It says a lot about him and about you. Hopefully he'll be able to fully recover.

Hugs & Healing Wishes,
Melanie & Racci

I am so sorry about Jake, but it sounds like he's already improving thanks to your awesome care. Many healing prayers coming your way!

I'm sorry to hear of Jake's stroke. What a fortunate boy to have such a loving mom! Hoping to hear of Jake's full recovery -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Judy, I'm sorry to hear about Jake's stroke. With your loving care he will be at home, with the people he loves and that will surely be bringing him happiness. I'm sending healing vines for his recovery.

Judy. ... Sending Jake many, many healing vines. He has the best mum...21 is amazing and it takes great care to get them there.

PLEASE NOTE:

For those of you who are posting in this thread, Judy posted a condo on 3/11 about Jake having crossed the Bridge due to complications from the stroke. Please post your kind thoughts in that condo.
