Hi, just checking in to see if I need to reduce Jack's dose by a tiny bit, or keep with this dose and let him settle longer? He's been getting some 50's, haven't caught anything lower yet. This week I am on vacation and we went to the beach for the day today. Wasn't sure how late we would be, but I figured he was running lower so we would be ok if I shot a reduced dose at +14 (1.5 un was my plan by figuring the percentage) and got back on track in the morning. So we get home and I checked him and at +14 he was 67! No shot then! Who knows what he did all day. I guess I will keep checking for him to start rising then shoot a lower dose. I will be home most of the day tomorrow.

Any other advice??? Thanks! I see there have been lots of lows with other kitties lately!

Update...120 @ +14.75, shot 1.25 un since he was rising. But then I realized he had eaten in between...so I hope he wasn't just rising because of food. Will keep a close eye on him tonight.

These things just seem to happen at the most inopportune time. It would have been wonderful to get checks in today to see what happened, but I'm sure you had a lovely time at the beach! And even if he was too low for a shot when you got home, he probably did well today, so I hope you're not too upset. These things happen.

With the lowered dose you have 2 options - either return to the 1.75U dose tomorrow, realizing it won't have reliable results for a few more days or stay with the 1.25U dose and see how he does. Actually I guess you could try 1.5U, but I bet you won't see these green numbers again until you return to 1.75U.

My question is, can you get in enough tests beginning in 4 or 5 days to catch another of this kind of low cycle on 1.75U to see how low he went and if a dose reduction is needed? I hate to tell you to lower the dose based on one preshot value that wasn't high enough to shoot. You are right that the food brought him up high enough to shoot. But it's OK. It gives you the knowledge that IF you had shot the 67, and he ate, it would have come up. It was still OK to give a reduced dose though.

I think since you've done so well with the testing you could return to 1.75U 'cause he's having really good numbers on it. I think you'll eventually catch a dose decrease worthy number. But he has to stay at these lower values long enough to get there.

How does that sound? Jack is very lucky to have you!

So he's 85 now at +2. And yes we did have a wonderful day at the beach and I wasn't too upset tonight, just not sure what to do. I mainly reduced the dose because of giving it late and wanting to stay on the regular time schedule in the next few days.
I will go back to 1.75 in the morning since we have been getting such good readings lately. We can keep up with the frequent testing (will pick up more strips while I pick up hurricane supplies!!).
Thank you for the help and encouragement, Vicky!

As of last night, they are saying it should hit us Sunday evening. Not as intense as if we were in the Carolinas, but it still should give us a lot of heavy rain and winds, power outages, etc. Hopefully it will change course or die down a bit! But better be safe and pick up the extra bottled water, batteries, flashlights, etc.

Sounds like how we prepare for ice storms in the Midwest!

Be careful. If we could talk the hurricane in to visiting us in West Central, IL, I'd appreciate it and so would the farmers. No significant rain for almost 2 months here.

Yep, we get the same panic here for snowstorms too. The stores were all packed with crazy people today!!
I'll gladly send you some of the rain we are supposed to get...6-10 inches. Just spent some time cleaning my basement in anticipation of flooding, ugh. But at least I am better off than those down South. I hope you get some rain soon.
Be safe everyone!

But back to my Jack...still some nice low numbers today. 106 PMPS...will see how he does tonight. I still can't believe how quickly he started dropping once we hit 1.75 units!!

Been out of power since 8am Sunday morning, might not get it back until the end of the week since half the state is out! But at least that was the only damage we had, and having to throw out stuff from the fridge and freezer. At Panera's now for wifi connection and powering things up. Finally got the ss updated. Of course Jack picks Sunday during the hurricane to drop to 46! Luckily he just hung in those numbers for the day with a little bounce in the evening. Today he was at 68 at +6 just as we were leaving the house to go to the mall. I stuck with 1.75 for now. If we get another low below 50, is that worthy of a dose decrease? This is now new territory for me.

Hopefully I can check the board from my Blackberry later. Cell service was bad yesterday. No work today since there was no power there either. Will try to update his ss as often as I can get a connection.

Hope everyone else on the East Coast is doing well!

Update...power back on at 4pm!!!

So glad your power came back on! Glad everything's OK after Irene where you live.

I don't think you should mess with success. if you are comfortable feeding his lows and he responds as well with coming back up and not rebounding, the 1.75U will allow his pancreas to rest and you might have to eventually reduce.

A below 40 would probably be cause for concern about lowering dose at this point. Remember cat's normal BGs can go as low as 40. It really depends on how comfortable you are with these lows. I'm just afraid he might not get these good numbers if you lower to 1.5U already.

Thanks, Vicky. I wasn't sure what my lowest low number should be that would signal a definite decrease. He is never symptomatic (though I know he might not be even with a lower number) and so far doesn't seem to drop steeply when he reaches the high 40's or low 50's...he just kind of hangs there for a while. As long as that is ok I am comfortable with holding the dose for now. I hate to lose the progress we have made as well!! These greens and blues are very nice!

He hung at some low numbers this morning! I was nervous to shoot the 50's this morning, finally shot an hour later at 79. At least I knew my kids were home all day to check him, and I left instructions in case he dropped below 40, but luckily he did very well! He's such a good boy for all these pokes!

Just read your post about Gandalf, I'm so sorry he is having a bad day. Will keep him in my thoughts...hope he feels better soon. And yet here you are, so supportive to us all. Thank you so very much!

Dropped to 40 at PM + 4.5. Fed him some of his usual FF Classic and 20 minutes later he is up to 53. Will recheck again in a little while to make sure he's still ok. Do I need to just shave a drop off the dose down to 1.65? Our times are just a little off today because of the stalled dose this morning and my brain is tired now and not functioning as well!
Will see how he is in the morning and if I can stick it out longer since the holiday w/e is coming up. Maybe we just had a little overlap with the dose, but only by half an hour. AM dose was at 7am, PM at 6:30pm. Not sure if that makes a big difference or not.
