I have been checking Oliver's BG every two hours today. Here are his readings using the ReliOn Micr::

Pre Injection - 270
Gave 1 Unit (Lantus)
+2 - 200
+4 - 181
+6 - 150
+7 - 141
+8 - 143
+10 - 128
+12 (Pre injection) - 138
Delayed injection. Gave Prednisolone (1.25 mg) at +12.
+13 - 152

I have been following the protocol recommended here and not giving an injection if Oliver is below 200. However, I also know that the Prednisolone causes his BG to spike. I just don't know if I should give him an injection tonight or not.

Re: I've already delayed injection one hour. Not sure what

His injection is now 1 hour and 15 minutes late. I guess it is too late to inject him now, so I guess I've made my decision. I really hate this. I want to get his BG under control, but I am so afraid of killing him with insulin. :?

If you are using a depot insulin, better to skip.
If you are using ProZinc or BCP PZI, you can shoot.

Could you edit your signature from Control Panel, Profile, Edit Signature and add in a few tidbits such as
Name
Cat's name
When diagnosed
Insulin
Food Meter
Any special conditions

This will help folks discuss options in context for your cat.

What is a depot insulin?

BTW, My Oliver looks like your cat. I tried to upload his photo but I couldn't do it. I am almost as bad with computers as I am with insulin.

Re: I've already delayed injection one hour. Not sure what

Depot insulins are Lantus and Levemir.

Lantus forms little crystals when injected. After that, the insulin is slowly dissolved for use.
Levemir binds to albumin in the blood stream. After that, the insulin is slowly released for use.

This slow release characteristic is why we say they create a depot. The sustained release over time typically lasts longer than 12 hours, resulting in some overlap between doses which keeps the glucose levels consistently lower.

Re: I've already delayed injection one hour. Not sure what

So you are using Lantus which is a depot insulin as BJ has instructed. As a newbie, we advise not shooting below 200 so you did the right thing. As you learn your cat's cycle - you will learn when and when not to shoot. This will happen later.

You should expect, with the missed shot last night, to be higher this morning. Don't freak out about that. You are doing a great job. This was a good cycle even with the pred so your instinct was right.
