Well it's official Blitzen is a diabetic . I woke to to vets call and his number was 618 I believe he said. She suggested 2u of Lantus twice daily if I'm comfortable with it. I will check his BG shortly and begin with treatment. Fingers crossed he's like his brother Dasher and we get control of it quickly. As far as urine they were unable to get a sample at their office because he relieved himself on their table when they started to collect a sample. I will do my best to get one at home because like I've mentioned my cays are absolutey terrified of other people and I don't want to put him through a vet trip again so soon.
Time to make another SS , the one below is Dashers.

Oh so sorry to hear this Robin! But you are good at this dance now so you'll have Blitzen OTJ before you know it.

Are you sure you want to listen to the vet and start at 2u though? I think most of the people on here have said that if on Lantus, to start with 1u and build up as necessary. My vet wanted me on 2u and I did exactly as she said...and for 6 weeks Silver bounced all over the place into black and reds. As soon as I started back from scratch at 1u, within a week I was seeing blues and greens and now he is on just 0.5.

Just a thought.

The calculation for a starting dose of Lantus is based on lean weight.

How much does he weigh?
How much should he weigh?
Take the lower weight.
Convert to kilograms (pounds / 2.2).
Multiply by 0.25.
Round down to the nearest quarter unit.

He weighed 17.97 lbs as far how much he should wrigh I would guess he should be at 14lbs or 15 lbs as he's just a very long large cat.
So 1.5 U or 1.75u ?

If 15 pounds is his ideal weight, that formula works out to 1.5 units, every 12 hours.

Ok I came out to 1.70075 for 15lbs but I don't know if I punched the number in right . 1.5 works for me. I did give 2u this morning but will reduce to the 1.5 this evening. I will also be keeping my eye on him today. Feeling confident this time around and under control.
Thank you.

Nothing like experience to boost the confidence!

Remember that Lantus builds up, so you got a bit of a head start on the depot by giving the 2 units. He may start showing how low he will go on that 1.5 as soon as 4 days, rather than the 5-7 days the initial dose commonly takes.
