So I hope I am not jinxing us, but its been 4 1/2 days since Skittles has needed any insulin ( going by his numbers that is )

what do ya'll think?

for sure! Hoping he stays like this. I hoping to start working on his legs and get his teeth looked at ( his breath is bad)
He jerked his head back tonight and really scratched his ear when I poked him, seemed like it took me forever to get him to stop bleeding. One of his ears is so much better then the other to get blood from
 
I was kinda thinking about giving skittle's a small dose of insulin because his numbers stay in the blue, but then on the other hand his numbers are not that high ( I think) What is your opinion? Tonight he was 99 and hasn't had any since his AM shot 4 days ago and before that only every other day. I cant "see" the way numbers are with just looking at his SS the way it is, I would have a better picture if I could see a chart with lines but I have no idea how to make one :nailbiting:
 
It is a hard decision. I definitely would not shoot 99. I probably wouldn't shoot under 180 or so, and then only a drop and monitor carefully. The tricky part of your situation is that he is dropping some on his own and you don't know when his pancreas is going to kick in and drive him lower. But you want him in low ranges so his pancreas can heal.

I wouldn't let him get back up in the 200s.
 
I wonder if his pancreas is healing with the numbers he is at now? I'm thinking it is or he would still be 400 & 500 like he was less then a month ago
 
Yes, I think his pancreas is definitely helping out. But it's a sometimes on, sometimes off thing. It "wakes up" and helps lower the number. Then it might rest awhile and not help. Sometimes a tiny bit of insulin helps keep him lower while the pancreas rests. The tricky part is that you have no idea when his pancreas will help out, so if you give insulin, you need to monitor carefully.
 
I agree. I think if you head up to around 180, I'd give just a drop or so and then carefully monitor. He might need a little help every once in awhile...that happens sometimes with kitties who are heading OTJ...

Im wondering to plz. Are you saying if he gets to 180 to shoot? If so, how much? Im thinking .5 unit ( gonna be hard since I still have U40's) I have to go get some 100. Are they called U100? I called them that but my pharm didnt know what I was talking about

here are his numbers for the last 3 days

wednesday AMPS= 164 ( 7:06 AM)
PMPS=92 ( 7:12 PM)

Thursday AMPS=129 (7:05 AM)
PMPS=89 (7:40 PM) late

Friday AMPS=99 (7:18 AM)

Last time he has insula was on 12/5 Saturday morning @ 7:30 AM
 
I think what Sue is saying is don't shoot below 180, but if Skittles gets to 180, shoot just a drop or two. That way it is a super low dose which we can always raise if needed...and it might give him the jump start he needs if his BG heads up.

I'm not sure where you can get u100 needles other than online...I ordered mine from ADW.

Oh, guess that explains why they didnt know what I was talking about. I thought they were the ones human's used so they would have them in stock :facepalm:
 
There ya go! Apparently it's me who should face palm haha! I wasn't sure what human diabetics use. Maybe if you call the pharmacy and tell them you just want the syringes a human would use?
 
Hi, Sherri - I always get my U100s (make sure you specify that they're marked on the half-unit*) at my local pharmacy or Walmart. Don't know what the laws are in your state as relates to syringe purchases, but I just take my paperwork from the vet's office along (the invoice that shows the ProZinc purchase/order) and have never had a problem getting them when I show that.:)

*(Once I didn't check the package before I got home - and the pharm tech gave me the wrong U100s:banghead:; had to return them for the correct ones ...)

I got ten U100 today. I haven't opened them ( skittles was 79 tonight) but they are orange & white ( my U40 are red ) I will be sure to double check before I or if I have to use them.
I sent a email to my vet today asking her about starting treatment for his neuropathy, was told to bring him in for B12 injections ( or I could start doing them on my own, but didn't tell me any details) I also gave them the last 5 days of his BG levels.
Got a return email telling me that 79 was nothing to worry about ( I did NOT express any concern over that number so have no idea why they said that) and to remind me that they told me to bring him back for a in house curve ( remember she said that she will test him not me )
My son is here for a visit, doesn't really know anything about diabetes but ask me why anyone would ever give insulin without testing first and did people really do that? He then asked me why vets don't explain everything to pet owners . Shocked me that he just asked me that out of the blue. He finally has his own cat who has stressed related UTI issues and finally gets the whole " furchildren" thing :)

This is one of those moments when we go (in response to a vet remark like that): "Huh???" Whaaaaat???!!!" and :rolleyes: "Sheesh ... some vets!":banghead:

Yeah, big $$$$$ for your veterinarian's office - something you can do at home AND likely would get way more accurate BG numbers because your kitty won't be doing the stress hyperglycemia thing we so often see happen with vet visits. (!)

Have you tried using Zobaline yet? There are many here @ FDMB who have had really good results in treating neuropathy with this supplement!:)

Merlin had diabetic neuropathy and it was really severe. The symptoms are walking on their back hocks. Severe conditions may also include their front feet. Merlin could never go more than a couple of steps before sitting down. We had to put down rugs all over the place so he wouldn't slip on the tile. To help this condition is to regulate the diabetes and to give them methyl B12; Zobaline.

There are two different B12, 1) Methylcobalamin and 2) cyanocobalamin (B12 injections). The Methyl type is for diabetic neuropathy not the cyano although the B12 injections don't hurt as it provides a little energy but it isn't specifically for diabetic neuropathy. There are other methyl b12 like at GNC, Hi Health but you must make sure that they contain no sugars. Zobaline is a small pink pill and can be crushed and put in his food.

No I havent. I did list that as one of the treatments for it. All they said was to come in for B12 shots ( and told me we can start AFTER he gets a dental $270.00 and his curve )

Can I buy Methyl B12 and Zobaline myself w/o a RX? How much do I give him? And is it anyway it can interfere with his BG numbers? He was running in the double numbers for days and for the last 2 days he is up to 108 & 109.
 
Methylcobalamin is over the counter, so no Rx needed.
Some folks have purchased the ingredients from Vitacost at less expense than Zobaline, mixed up their own, and given the same dose as Zobaline - 300 mcg, I believe (check that - I'm on my phone and not my PC, so can't search quickly).
 
Lots of people here use Methycobalamine (methyl B12). The brand name is Zobaline. I think Amazon and some health food places carry it. Much cheaper than B12 shots!

As long as he is under 120, you can still be counting for 2 weeks toward remission. You might watch to see when those times are - any chance he got into something higher carb then?

I have noticed that when he gets walmart brand food he stays in the double numbers, and with certain Friskies he will go up. the highest was 164 last wednesday morning. and running 108 & 109 the past 2 days. Friskies is under 10 carbs. where special kitty ( walmart brand) has very low to no carbs. The list I had got all the walmart brand off of....I cant find it anymore here. and used my last can already. I also comes in the big cans.

He was so feisty and trying to get away at his AMPS and he had jumped onto the back of the couch so he must have been feeling good! LOL! he was 105 today. He was 107 at PMPS last night.

I write down and post those times on his SS. Ive only been testing in the AM & PM the last few days. I plan on doing a curve sometime this week. So he was 164 last wednesday morning, does that mess up his "12" days?
