I gave him his first shot ever of Levemir last night - 1U - and he was going crazy itching and licking the injection site for several hours last night - is this normal?

has anyone else had this or noticed this?

I read on the manufacturer's website that itching can happen and goes away in a few days.. hopefully this is a temp thing.. He seems ok this am.. It lasted about 1.5-2 hrs last night. I sat with him and put an ice pack against the site for a bit and that seemed to help him.

Don't rub the injection site either. I remember some members doing that and reporting a red rash /bumps. Leave the injection site alone after you inject, only running your hand lightly over the fur, to check for a "fur shot" where you may have missed with the injection.

I am hoping this was a one-time thing, as this am's shot, he didn't do this and seems fine - he's not licking/scratching and seems to tolerate this one normally.

Going to stick with this new insulin for a few days and watch him very closely.

funny thing is that this only happened on the first shot and then since then (last thurs night) he has been fine.
