Hidey is still off insulin. He has been off insulin since March 18th, but the past few days we've been teetering on higher numbers. Once his numbers seemed to be going up I've been trying very hard to keep him on the much lower carb wet foods. I have also been cutting out most of his seafood varieties since that is the recommendation because of mercury. Lately he has been getting a lot of the chicken varieties from Tiki (mainly 0% carbs) His numbers went higher. I started to give him some seafood varieties (also 0%) and his numbers are dropping again. At first I was thinking it was the 0% because I have read some posts that some cats dont react good on the 0% and do better with some carbs but he did fine on the seafood 0%. Is this just a coincidence????

How do you tell if his mercury is too high, heck he's mainly had seafood varieties since he was a kitten.

Also, Ive noticed that when he is in the blues he is EXTREMELY hungry. Yellows and greens he's fine but blues and he's looking for more.

Remember that both protein and fat can be broken down to make carbohydrates, Check the % fat content on each to see how that varies - typically, fish has less fat.

I was thinking about that also and they all seem pretty close in fat content. Thats why I wondering if maybe since he's been getting so much seafood over the years that fish is easier for his body to process then poultry? I just can''t figure it out LOL maybe he was just having a day....or a couple for that matter lol. He goes in for his dental on the 17th so hopefully that will help. I have to call the vet Wednesday to see if they have any cancellations (they only do dentals on Thursdays) thats why hes not going in til the 17th.

I think his worst days have been Friday and Saturday.

Friday- AM- Tiki-Hookena Luau (chic & fish) Protein:70%, fat: 29% carbs: .99%
PM- Tiki-Koolina Luau (chic) Protein: 86%, fat: 14%, carbs: 0%

Saturday- AM- Tiki- Napili Luau (fish & chic) Protein: 81%, fat: 19%, carbs: 0%
PM- Weruva- Marbella Paella (fish) Protein: 62%, fat: 37%, carbs: .99%

Sunday- AM-Hanalei Luau (fish) Protein: 76%, fat: 24%, carbs: 0%
PM- canned tuna

Monday- AM- Weruva- outback grill (fish) Protein: 62%, fat: 37%, carbs: .99%

Am I not seeing something in these numbers. I apologize Im just trying to pin point what makes him spike up and its driving me crazy that I havent found it.

I also serve the Tiki foods to all of my cats - when I can get it. I often get emails from my online source that they are not able to fill my order and my pet-store hasn't been able to get their order filled for several months so I don't know if it has been recalled in Taiwan or what.

But... back to the subject - my sugarcat also gets Wellness Core Grain Free food as a snack because it is 8% carb and it keeps him from going too low at his nadir and then bouncing the next day. I try to give it to him at +6 of each cycle. So some cats might need a bit more carbs in their diet to keep them regulated. I know mine does.

Where do you usually buy your Tiki? I get mine on chewy.com and wag.com and I've never had a problem with them being out of stock?

I need to figure out which foods keep him lower :( He's been off insulin and Id like to keep him that way. Im really hoping it will be easier once he goes in for his dental, I know one tooth is bad and Im hoping that is the issue we're running into.

I use chewy for my Tiki and have rec'd emails from them that they can not fill my order - several times. It is hit or miss but it's usually the day before they ship and then I have to run out and find something for them to eat. I mostly feed raw and am transitioning off Tiki as their supplement food.

Ive been so interested in raw, but isnt it costly and time consuming? I also worry about bacteria? Ive tried giving my cats a piece of raw chicken when I was considering it and they turned their nose up to it LOL.

Cats have short digestive systems so food is not in their systems long enough for bacterial poisoning. That's why they often go to the litter box right after they eat. So no, I don't worry about the bacteria. I am feeding five cats, twice a day and it costs about $80 a month. It takes under two hours to make and I make it twice a month. Clean up takes longer than the grinding. Catinfo.org is where you learn about the benefits and recipe for a raw diet. I like the immediate results in their health, fur and poo as well as activity. It is a commitment but I like having control over what they are eating. I don't like by-products. Catinfo.org will tell you what by-products are and you will be disgusted.

Thank you for that site. I notice they have other types of meat as well such as chicken, and turkey that is already ground up with the organs and bones. Is that acceptable or would I still have to buy chicken with bones and grind them myself? Also could I use venison as well?

Also how do you figure the nutrition content? Add nutrition content from each item added then divide by serving?

If you look up the human values for percent weight for each of protein, fat, and carbohydrate, you can multiply by the calories per gram for cats and dogs.
3.5 calories per gram for protein and carbohydrate
8.5 calories per gram for fat

Then take total calories and calculate the percent of calories from each of protein, fat, and carbohydrate.

I use the Tasin grinder and get rabbit and other meat from Hare Today out of Pennsylvania. The shipping is very expensive so it is only cost effective if you order lots at a time. My cats will only eat chicken so I don't order from them much anymore. I buy five pound packs of chicken thighs with bone and skin from Whole Foods along with a tub of chicken livers and free range eggs.
