Is there a way to attach an excel file directly

to a message? or does it have to be published out to the web.?

I believe you can with the 'upload a file' button to the right of 'Post' button - haven't tried it but I think you can.

Just click on upload a file and select the Excel file yo want to upload and then Post Reply.
