Is purina I/D ok for diabetics?

The only I/D that I can find is Hills and that comes in at 26%. (for the dry) I looked at Purina's veterinary site and they aren't even listing an I/D as one of the prescription foods that they make. Are you sure it is made by Purina? Also wet or dry food?

Sorry it's hills I/d canned. Holy crap. It had 24g of carbs!! I asked the vet if it was safe for diabetics and he said yes. Ozzie only needs to be on it for a day or two. He's been having diahrrea and has also been prescribed flagyll.

The only prescription food that is low enough in carbs in the Purina DM. The rest of the brands don't even get low enough with their diabetic formulas wet foods.

That said. When they need a special diet, sometimes they need a special diet. We adjust, we test more, we watch for bad signs. If it is just for stomach upset, the flagyll will probably clear that up on it own without a change in diet. A couple of days isn't too bad. When we've had to feed or medicate with things we'd prefer not to, we watch the numbers and if we see them heading into bad territory we re-evaluate the priority of the med/food vs keeping the BGs down.

Ughhh. He only had half a can. Just tested 15 mins after feeding and he was at 92. Ozzie has been otj for two weeks now. I will just go back to his fancy feast in the morning and will test him then. I can't believe my vet thought it was ok for him to have that food!! Good thing I checked before giving him more!!

Well sometimes we have to work around other conditions so test him often and if you have to you may have to start him back on insulin since those carbs are going to bring up his BGs again.

Which bites since his spreadsheet looks beautiful, but if it is what he needs then you just have to keep an eye on his numbers and shoot around the extra carbs. :YMHUG:

Thanks:) here's hoping his numbers don't spike too much tonight. We've been doing so good. I'll test in an hour and again in the am.
