Is Mitz trying to go into remission right before we leave on vacation?

So DH, the dogs and I will leave next Saturday for a week away and a pet-sitter will come twice a day to give Mitz her shots. I'm not sure how this will work because in the last week, Mitz has gone from 0.8 units to o.4 (which I'm thrilled about!:cat:) and tonight she is too low to shoot. The sitter is willing to try BG testing but she's never done it herself and has only seen me do it once. A lot can change in a week, but at this point I'm wondering if it might be best to NOT have her give insulin unless she can test first, and then maybe only 0.2.

@Sue and Oliver (GA) and any other ProZinc pros, your thoughts? Thanks for any and all advice on this!

That sounds like a good plan. It would be ideal if she could test. Even call you for advice if she is unsure? Or maybe you will get lucky and Mitz would be too low to shoot while you are gone (anti jinx)
 
Maybe give her the list of secondary monitoring tools and ask her to monitor food and water intake and output, plus do dehydration checks. If she is there long enough after feeding that Mitz takes an opportunity to pee (often within 20-30 minutes after eating), checking for ketones is good too.

Also, give her written permission to take your cat to the vet if something urgent/emergent arises.
Let your vet know who the pet sitter is and how to reach you in an emergency.
In the event of hospitalization, the pet sitter should have written care instructions for the vet's office, so there is no misunderstanding about food, nor insulin dosing.
 
Hoping she will learn to test and that your baby will let her.
My new next door neighbor, that I met through fdmb, knows all about it! BUT, Bean would not let her test or shoot :eek:
 
Thanks @ohbell. The shots should be fine. I had the sitter give one and she did fine. The testing with be more challenging. We won't get to see the sitter again before we leave so I really hope she can figure it out. I'll leave her as much information as I possibly can and hope Mitz cooperates!
 
Well, if she has a kitty of her own, she could practice and the meter set up is pretty reasonable from Walmart?
I would just wonder if your baby is going to let her?
But at least if she knows how before she gets there, she would be more confident in trying on a new baby
OR.... if there is a sugar mom already in your area? perhaps you could get them to stop in for this task?
 
Three days until we leave - Here's another option I'm considering and I'd really love some feedback. What if I have the sitter shoot 0.2 and add some medium-carb food (Wellness 'minced' and 'sliced' version) to each meal. I'll still encourage her to test but that might relieve the pressure on her and also help keep Mitz in safe numbers. Mitz is doing so well lately that I'm afraid of the set back from potentially skipping insulin for a whole a week if the sitter is not able to get a successful test. Please take a look at the spreadsheet and let me know what you all think.

I don't know, Joan. Your amps this morning was really nice and low. If he were mine, I think I'd err on the side of caution. If she can't get a test, then skip. It is true that he is looking great and you don't want a set back. But you don't want a hypo when no one is around.

Sometimes we suggest a while off insulin when they are running in normal ranges most of the time. You could think of this week as a trial period...you can get him back on track when you return?
 
Sue, I appreciate your input. OK. I'll tell the sitter not to shoot unless she can test. What would you recommend as a good no shoot number for her? I was thinking maybe 150? And then only shoot 0.2?

Sent my pet sitter plan to our holistic vet (who is totally supportive of what I'm doing and is very impressed with FDMB, and admits she doesn't know that much about about current FD protocols since she hasn't treated an FD kitty for about 10 years :)) and she suggested 200 (instead of 150) as the sitter's no-shoot number just to be extra cautious. Thoughts?
 
Many folks have sitters give a reduced dose. If your sitter is willing to test, using the higher no shot limit would be added safety.
 
I agree. You can safely shoot that low as you are used to it and can be there to monitor. But with a sitter, higher is probably better.
