Is Hypurin Bovine PZI still available in UK?

Hi,
I know there are folks in the UK with their cats on Hypurin Bovine PZI. My usual vet is away but another vet there told me that it is no longer available in the UK for animals. Could it be that the cats that were already on it are being allowed to continue but newly diagnosed are not having it prescribed or have they got it wrong :?

Hope someone can clarify this!

Many thanks

Julie

Hi Julie,

I've heard nothing about Hypurin no longer being available.
It never has been licensed for animal use. It's a human insulin, but vets have been able to prescribe it under the 'cascade system'.

There used to be PZI insulins for animal use. But these are no longer available. Perhaps this is where the confusion is coming from?

And the RVC are currently trialling PZI alongside Lantus in their feline diabetes trials. I'm guessing that must be Hypurin PZI (unless there's another one I don't know about...? Maybe someone else can clarify that...?)

I sincerely hope Hypurin doesn't cease to become available! nailbite_smile

It must still be available as Rebus was switched onto it 2 weeks ago by my vet.

I had to go through the process of showing that caninsulin wasn't being effective before he switched, but switch he did.

FWIW Rebus has acromegaly so is needing some large doses, and we still don't have him stabilised.

Nick,

Thanks for that info about PZI availability.

I am so sorry though to hear about Rebus' Acromegaly diagnosis.
How is he doing? Is the PZI giving better results than the Caninsulin?
And how is he in himself?
And how are you doing?

We're doing ok, I think....

This is only week 2 of the hypurin so it's early days, but I think we're going in the right direction. Rebus is neither up nor down since this whole thing started, although we are managing to get his weight back up to a more normal level.

Our vet has been excellent, very accessible, and he seems to be genuinely interested.

It can be a little stressful at times, but what can you do? He's our wee man and he'll get whatever he needs :-D

Its good to hear that Hypurin PZI is definately still available in the UK (a vet at our practice said not). My own vet is back today so I am going to ask her about it. I'd really like to know if it is a little more flexible regarding the amount of fluid in a jab as Alice can go too low on just a hair line more & too high if the reverse! She is only small (now 3.35 Kgs) so I suppose any increment is going to affect her more than a large cat. She has no fat on her at all!

I'm still a little unsure if changing is the right thing to do or not, I don't want to complicate things any further. Bovine must mean it is beef based & I am beginning to suspect she is also sensitive to beef having fed it her both neat and also in the Catz fine food. I suppose it could be different as its not by mouth?? She seems to shoot up quite high at the end of a cycle but I'm not convinced its always a bounce from having gone too low confused_cat

All the best Nick to you & Rebus. Hope all goes well. Sounds like Rebus is in very good hands! Much calmer and more sensible than myself

Hi Julile,

The insulin is highly purified, so I'm not sure if anything of the 'beef' remains (maybe ask your vet?). It is also only one amino acid away from a cat's own insulin, and so deemed very suitable from that point of view.

Hi again,

I discussed Alice & her SS with the vet (who now has my password to access it). She apparently is part of an endocrinology group & could access the forum & put some questions about Alice to the expert group there who have dealt with this for years. She is open to the change to PZI but would first like to ask questions. She is wondering if her insulin could be diluted to give a more accurate dose. She thinks Alice's pancreas is 'pulsing' insulin sometimes and not others (explaining the high BGs & yet needing so little insulin). Her experience as been that normally when a cat needs less insulin then they don't normally get these high numbers too. I really don't know but it will be interesting to see what the experts say. She's a fabulous girl & rang me late from home after a very taxing Sunday at work, no charges for her time or advice! Very much like you folk here! She also adores cats! :thumbup

I'll let you know how it goes - thankfully the Bovine Hypurin PZI IS available as you say thankfully!

Your vet doesn't need your password to access your SS. All you need to do is share the link with them, just like you do here in your signature.
