Hello guys. I am new in here. My Thomas is diabetic and I am trying to find a good alternative to expensive diabetic food like Hills and Royal Canine.
I should mention that I am a newly graduated vet and, although I don't have so much experience in treating diabetes, Grau looks like a proper food to me.
The vet, which helps me in this problem, recommended me to keep using RC or Hills, but it is way to expensive for my young pocket.
Living in eastern Europe I don't have to many options, but I can order Grau through Zooplus.
I would like to know if any of you uses this food and if it is the proper thing for a diabetic , 10 years old, tomcat. confused_cat

There is a nice topic in the Feline Health forum on foods for international members, at the top of the posts. Here is a link to that post. Canned cat food for EUROPEANS and INTERNATIONAL buyers

What country are you in?

Member Dr. Schroedinger (aka Juliet), recently put this google doc together for those in the UK. diabetic cat food UK

Those 2 lists/links should help to get you started. Some of the Grau grain free foods are on there, along with other ideas.

Welcome! How long ago was Thomas diagnosed diabetic?

Deb has already provided you with some great food info. Just wanted to comment on this:

Not only is it too expensive, it's also not really any better for your cat. ;-)

Hello, and welcome to FDMB!

I'm in the UK and I buy Grau grain-free for my diabetic boy (from Zooplus here). Grau is rated very highly here in the UK as being an excellent cat food, and it is also quite low in carbohydrate, so good for diabetics too. Zooplus here also do Catz Finefood, which, like Grau, is really good quality. And they do Bozita canned food too, - lower price but still good. Where are you in Europe? Are those foods also available to you from your Zooplus? If so then that could give you some more choices. (And there are more foods too in the list that Deb gave you the link to).

We look forward to hearing more about you and your kitty!

First of all, thank you for your answers and sorry for replying so lately. flip_cat

@Deb & Wink Thank you for the links. I can see on that list many foods which are available on Zooplus: Bozita for example. I live in Romania and I can order from zooplus.ro.

@KPassa He was diagnosed in September this year. He was on hills m/d for almost a month, but he started to refuse it. After eating hills, proteins showed up in his urine test- his kidney were not happy at all. I quited hills and kept him on chicken meat and a sort of canned food which seemed to me the best available in pet stores in here. All this time he was on an intermediate insulin.

Now he is on Lantus, starting from today. He ate RC diabetic wet in the last two days. The funny thing is that after RC feeding his glucose was higher, comparing to the level after the ordinary food. After reading the list above I think to get him some grau grain-free and bozita, but my colleague told me she doesn't trust this food and that I should go on with RC, hills or Purina. I am confused right now as I don't know what decision to make.

@ Elizabeth and Bertie Hello there. I am also thinking about using Zooplus. It is actually the only place where I can find these foods, here in Romania.
Thank you for the congrats. I never thought that I would learn more about diabetes on " my own skin" . :dizcat

I must order his food as soon as possible, but I am still confused. I want to order bozita and grau grain-free, but on the other hand I am scared to not get him worse.

Where does your concern lie with the Bozita and the Grau? I ask simply because I understand your reluctance; it's really not long since I was terrified that I was going to make my cat, Toby, ill by taking his prescription food away. He was eating a food for cats with urinary issues because he's had problems with crystal formation in the past, but now that I've switched him to all wet low carb, he's doing so much better, and I'm certainly not the only one to experience this or similar. As someone else on the forum so aptly put it, feeding a diabetic cat food high in carbohydrates is like saying "Sure, eat all the doughnuts you want, just use more insulin".

Best of luck with Thomas :-D

Maybe confused is not the right word to use, more like scared. I am worried about taking a bad decision. Anyway, I am going to get him bozita and grau.I can see that you are using bozita. :RAHCAT
