Is 3 units too much?

Because he is getting to a low number by the next pre-shot test (we suggest not shooting below 150 mg/dL), that suggests the dose may, indeed, be too high. You want to be able to shoot consistently every 12 hours.
As you collect mid-cycle tests (between +5 to +7), you may be able to develop a sliding scale where you may adjust the dose based on how low it takes the glucose.

First, his kidney levels don't seem to be that bad, so I'd really concentrate on getting the diabetes under better control. His BUN is a little too high (at 105) but his creatinine (2.1) and phosphorus (4.1) are in the normal range. The BUN can be elevated if he's on a high protein diet and doesn't necessarily mean there's a big problem with his kidneys. It'll be interesting to see what you get on the SDMA!

Getting the blood glucose under control will help his kidneys more than the fancy prescription food, so I'd work on finding a food he likes that's low carb....The Fancy Feast Classics are fine! Now if the SDMA comes back higher than normal, you'd want to find a food that's both low carb and low phosphorus....that's the best way to help those kidneys out as well as getting as much water into him as possible (which you're already doing with the SubQ's)

You can also use a phosphorus binder on foods that are too high, but right now, I really don't think his kidney values necessitate the use of any binders.

Most of our kitties here have some level of CKD as well as diabetes because the high BG is really hard on the kidneys, so getting those numbers down will do more than anything to help with his kidneys.

His levels were --> Creatinine - 7.8 ; BUN 105; Phosphorus 4.1.
Also, I just found his old paperwork. His SDMA was 34 on May 25th.
We are doing a mixed plate, offering many options. Currently we are offering FF Classic Chicken, Weruva Steak Frites, NF Wet and KD wet.... And when he is being picky we put a small handful of the dry kidney kibble in the middle of the food to get him eating. So far the dry kibble doesn't seem to be affecting his BG levels, so that is a relief. Mister is also a grazer, so the vet wants to keep it normal for him. We refresh his plate at least 3 times a day.
We will know more tomorrow after they do his bloodwork in house and then send it out to the lab.

Have you seen the info on Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Chronic Kidney Disease? Lots of great information there about treatment

The Fancy Feast is definitely too high in phosphorus unless you're using a phosphorus binder. I'm not sure about the Weruva but I'll see if I can find the info for that. (There are several people here with charts that have foods broken down in low carb/low phosphorus...I'll see if I can find one of them too)

It's fine to feed multiple times a day....it's actually easier on the pancreas instead of feeding just a couple of huge meals, so if he's used to grazing, that's fine. You just don't want him to eat for the 2 hours right before PS times so the number isn't influenced by food
 
The Steak Frites is a good choice...it's both low carb and low phosphorus!!

There's nothing "magic" about the prescription foods...the word "prescription" when it comes to pet foods actually has no meaning whatsoever

The Hills people just trademarked the name "Prescription" and only allow it to be sold in vets offices as a marketing ploy
 
There's a lot of good, low phosphorus, diabetic safe Weruva foods. They are especially great if you need lower fat levels for obesity, pancreatitis, or IBD issues. The chart Chris posted gives you the values you need to decide what flavors might work best. Look for ones less than 10% carbs and 250 mg/100 kcal phosphorus.

If fat levels aren't a huge concern, I'd also check out some Wellness flavors if you need a pate style food.
 
Oh I meant to answer your question a little better too.....It looks like 3 units may be too much

It would have been great if you could have gotten a mid-cycle test in today....it really looks like he may have gone lower on the AM cycle and then he "bounced" high again by PMPS time

Bounces happen when 1. the blood glucose drops too low 2. it drops too much, too quickly and 3. it drops to a level the cats body just isn't used to being at anymore. (or any combination of all 3)

The liver reacts by releasing stored sugars and hormones to bring them back up quickly....bounces can take up to 3 days to clear the body, so you don't want to increase the dose just because of "bounce numbers"

I'd really suggest you go ahead and get your Signature information filled out and then start posting over in the ProZinc forum....the people there all use ProZinc and have lots of experience with making it work!! I wrote instructions on doing the Signature in your Introduction post
 
Editing your Signature

In the upper right corner of the screen, within the dark blue bar, you will see ID, Inbox, and Alerts

This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
Add any other text, such as your name | cat's name | date of Dx (diagnosis) | insulin | meter general location (city and state/province) any other pertinent issues like if there are any food issues, history of DKA, hepatic lipidosis, pancreatitis, allergies, IBD, etc.

Click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
