We all know the power of LL. Let us all send prayers and positive vines to all of the residents of the East Coast during this critical time.

Re: IRENE

Amen to that, Barbara. Definitely keeping all of our LL family members in Irene's path in my thoughts and prayers. Having lived in Miami for 4 years, I don't miss the "excitement."

Re: IRENE

Indeed...keeping all in my prayers this weekend...

Just came from the pet sitter forum ...I could not imagine being a pet sitter along the east coast right now. So many professional sitters trying to get their own pets settled in and home prepared....AND THEIR CLIENTS HOMES TOO! I think I'd have a zoo in the anticipated 'safest' home.

Dear Mr. So&So,

I am calling to get permission to place a few extra animals in your home to ride out the storm. In my case that would be 12 cats and one dog this weekend.

They are out there scrambling to bring in patio furniture, hanging baskets, feeders, anything loose that can act as a projectile, taping client windows and getting pets comfy in 'safe rooms.' I was just amazed at these professional pet sitters and their dedication to the animals in their care as well as their clients homes.

Re: IRENE

and soooo many members indeed along the east coast. which reminds me, anybody not in that area might want to make a note to check on the boards a bit more than usual or check other parts of them like health, etc.... over the next few days, especially if we start hearing of power outages or notice a shortage of people around & helping.

also, for those in the effected areas, does someone have a phone number for you? or you have someone else's number who is not in Irene's path? it might be a good idea to buddy up with someone or share a number with someone in case you end up having an emergency and need some input and can't get online?

sounds like flooding might be the biggest issue in a lot of the areas in it's path so bag stuff up (ziploc bags for important documents?), put stuff in containers (shoeboxes, even food storage containers, anything with a lid?), and sit stuff up high if you can?

praying this thing peters out soon and that the weather people are blowing things out of proportion as they are so known to do.

Re: IRENE

Sending my best thoughts and prayers to all in the path. My family is in MA. not too far from Boston so my heart is there as well. Everyone stay safe.

Re: IRENE

I actually just saw a very interesting tip on Weather.com that I had never heard before. They said to fill a LOT of Ziploc baggies (not quite to the top) with water and put them in the freezer. If the power goes out, that thermal mass of frozen baggies will help keep the entire fridge cold for a good amount of time. Needless to say, Trixie's insulin and the thought of losing power is at the forefront of my mind.

Just remember that insulin will be okay for a month if it has not yet been opened and out of the frig. The open insulin will probably be okay for several days as well. Also, the frig will stay cold longer if you do not open it very much. Hopefully you will not lose power and this storm will lose some of its punch as it moves up the coast.

Re: IRENE

Yep, I'm defintely trying to keep in mind that the insulin will be OK for a few days if not in the fridge, but since I'm a natural born worrier, I can't help myself. oddly, that's the only thing I'm concerned about...not worried at all about the big ole trees around the house!

Re: IRENE

Stay safe, everyone. Perhaps this is the place and time to mention the Frio Travel Wallet. No refrigeration required, just cold water. Claudia told me about these and I bought one for emergencies:

It really does keep the insulin at a safe temperature.

I forgot about these. I bought one years ago for my pump but I never use it as Imy pump is fine at whatever temp it is. I wonder if i can find it. Will have to hunt for it. It really does work.

Re: IRENE

Thinking of all our East Coasters and hope all that needed to evacuate did so and are safe today. Sending vines and prayers. I have family and friends in NC, NY and PA, but so far everyone is okay, and most live inland.

Re: IRENE

Hi from mid-way through Virginia. My DH and I are racing ahead of the storm to get to Delaware to assist my mother if needed. Her home is in direct path of Ms Irene. We think some of the media is exaggerating but we will be careful. So far weather is partly sunny with some dark clouds. We have seen many utility trucks racing north with us.

Listening to weather channel "guy on the beach" as he chastises others for being outside. Kind of hypocritical, yes?

Hi CD, Please be careful and stay safe. Yes, better to get your Mom out of the way if there's a chance of the hurricane in her area. Keep in touch when you can do so.

We are still driving... Almost there. Wind is ... exciting. :? Torrential rains. Very few cars so that's good. Toll booth was abandoned - first time in my memory. Couple of cars slid and crashed in front of us about an hour ago. Dumb driver was speeding and did fast lane changes. Can you say "hydroplane?" no one hurt. We drove around to avoid getting clipped. Otherwise all is good. Can't wait to get out of the car. It was a hard 12 hours.

Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Oh please be careful CD! Do check in again once you have arrived, if you can.
I hope you find your mom and her property in perfect condition.

Sending well wishes, thoughts and prayers as well. I'm pretty far away from all the activity, but if anyone needs a place to go, I've got some room. Please stay safe..CD, you stay safe too!!!

We got here safely. The winds are sometimes pretty gusty and various small debris blows against the window and startles us, but not bad. The power has been blinking but came back on. The bands of rough weather go by and then subside so it gets quiet then noisy. Mother is as feisty as ever, heheh. But I think she's glad to have us here now.

The winds/rain seemed to have damaged a little bit of the deck maybe... we can't tell because it's a dark and stormy night, (I always wanted to say that) but we have a serious leak going on down to the first floor. We have buckets and towels to try to keep most of the water contained. I hope the rain lets up soon. Now there is a tornado warning and the alerts keep taking over the TV and radio stations. I think we are a few miles west of the path so we aren't concerned. And it may be just a 'possible' thing, not for sure.

Ah... it's quiet again. So glad to be out of the car. We are totally safe now. :-D Thank you for all your concern.

I hope everyone else is doing ok. The Virginia Beach area looked pretty flooded and many are without power south of us. My thoughts are with our LL family in North Carolina and Virginia areas that have been hit hard.

Glad you arrived safely. Hope the power stays on. My S and DIL lost their power and they are 60 miles from DC in VA. Stay safe, good luck with the leak. Rain, rain, go away!

Very happy to see you arrived and are safe. Yes...water will leak in anywhere it can in this kind of weather and wind.

Recovery will involve have the seal replaced on the windows if you have leaking.

Roof should be inspected for damage by a reputable roofer. Even if it doesn't appear to have damage, have it inspected. We had a number of roofs need replacement once they were inspected after that horrible storm back in May.

Sump systems should be inspected if they flooded.

And if there is access to foundational drain tiles ...these two should be inspected after the flooding and torrential rains. My one draintile line is clogged after our "freak 5 inches of rain in an hour," a few weeks ago.

The fact is many of the homes being impacted by Irene were not built for this kind of an event. While it may appear the building got through unscathed...it is well worth having it professionally inspected.

God Bless and keep you all safe.
