I bought a bottle of insulin Lantus U-100 on 3/23. The direction are 1/2 unit 2 times a day. The expiration date on the bottle is 04/2014. Isn't this bottle supposed to last 6 months? The pharmacist says "Oh, its a 30 day supply". The fill date is 3/23 and it says (on the box) that it expires 3/06. What should I do? Who do I call first? Maybe thats why she isnt getting better

1) From production, there is a tested amount of time during which the product is guaranteed to be potent. (aka sell by date)

2) Once you start using it, there is a tested amount of time it will continue to be potent. When it was submitted to the FDA for approval, the amount of time it was tested was 28 days. That is different from saying it immediately turns bad after 28 days. Many Lantus users have used a vial or pen for up to 6 months by keeping it refrigerated and on a stationary shelf.

3) If it is 'expired' (over 6 months) it may be less effective but not ineffective. You'd want to be careful when switching to a new vial or pen.

Hi Laura,

Most likely, your insulin is okay. Is the insulin clear? If there are "floaties" or particles in it, that may indicate there is a problem. Most members here use their insulin for several months past its "expiration date" without a problem. I used Jersey's insulin for two months with no problems whatsoever.

It's very likely that Mom-Mom's numbers aren't coming down because of that infected tooth. Getting that infection taken care of might really help her numbers. I know several people have given you some links on the TR board regarding financial options. Hopefully some of those will be helpful to you.

I did apply care.com and got denied. I tried a few other resources but, no good. My vet told me "dont worry about what you owe me, just bring her in". He knows just how much she means to me. Hopefully, everything will turn out in my angel's way, Cause (I "say a little prayer for you" The moment I wake up, da da and put on my make up --- I say a little prayer for you. Wheew I sure am tired. Good night all. LMAO

Your vet is a nice person. Good luck with the dental. I have been using the same vial sinces November 15th and it is still clear and working well.

If you purchased it from a pharmacy on 3.23 and it said it expired on 4/2014 I would return it and ask for a vial with a later expiration date. That happned to me many years ago and they took it back but I did not open it it yet. I would call the corporate office of the pharmacy if necessary. That is what I did.

However, the insulin should still be good.

I just had a thought. Is that the date marked on the box by the manufacturer or did the pharmacist put their own date on it? My box that I was given actually was stamped that it was good for a year. If the manufacturer's state expires in a month ,I would go back there. If they made their own expiration date of 30 days that would be because we are told that once used it only lasts 30 days but we know it can last at least 4-6 months.
