Introduction - Meet Charlie

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself since I'll probably be asking my share of questions around here. I found this site after being directed here from the Feline Diabetes group on Facebook. My name is Anna and I'm married and pregnant with my 1st child. I have 2 kitties, Charlie (age 9) & Molly (age 16). Charlie is my diabetic and Molly has her own trouble with CRF, IBD, and pancreatitis. We adopted Charlie from my brother and his family around 2010 and quickly found out he had diabetes. It's likely that he has had it (untreated) for years before coming to us, as my brother and his wife were not getting him proper veterinary care. He has diabetic neuropathy in his back legs and is on Humulin-N 2.5 units b.i.d. When an incompetent vet instructed us to increase his insulin by 2 units a day back in Nov, we almost lost him...we found him in a comatose state on the floor one morning, mouth open, eyes glazed, and he had used the bathroom all over himself (it was pretty traumatizing!). Since then, I test his blood sugar twice a day religiously. He's been on Humulin for a year, and since we can't get him regulated, I'm taking him back to the vet next week (Feb 6th) to see about switching to Lantus or Levimir -- with the help of DCIN.

That's about it, really..He's an incredibly sweet cat. He loves to cuddle, is wonderful with kids, and would not hurt a fly! He's been so protective of my tummy since I became pregnant, lol...it's so sweet. :-D

Please feel free to introduce yourself, too! Or, I can continue to get to know you all through reading your posts. I love that there are groups like this out there. The facebook group has been a huge resource of knowledge for me, and I know this forum will be as well!!

Hey Anna, i am Ann Pettersson in the FB group. So glad you and Charlie finally found your way here to the FDMB forum.

Guess we need to work on Charlie's bgs and neuropathy. Since you test every day, you can set up a spread sheet here with the numbers, hours and other related information. With that spread sheet others can help you better.

Welcome and hugs
Ann & Simba in Sweden

Tried to find you a link that told how you set up a spread sheet and then add it to your signature, but i can't find any, but I know others will help you with that.

Welcome to the FDMB family, Anna and Charlie! cat_pet_icon

Have to run to work so only have the chance to say welcome and scoot! Have a great day! :-D

Welcome! Charlie is beautiful! Check out the technical support forum for info on setting up the spreadsheet that was mentioned. There is a wonderful amount of information on this site. Please take time to read as much as you can. ;-)

Thank you so much, everyone!! I've been looking around the site and reading up on things. I'll be looking into setting up a spreadsheet for Charlie's numbers. I guess it'd be helpful to see how much they change with the new insulin. Can't wait til his vet appt on Wednesday!! dancing_cat

Hi, Anna. I think I've seen you on the Facebook group. I've posted there a couple of times too. Atticus and I are still new to this but he's already so much better. I've gotten so much help here on the board and have learned a lot in a short time. Let us know how the vet visit goes. Atticus is on Lantus, and he seems to have done really well so far.
