Hello everyone,

My name is Angel and my recently diagnosed sugarcat is Artemis.
We've been through a hellish two weeks.
Two weeks ago our cat suddenly stopped eating. She lost weight super fast and became like a little skeleton. She's always been very petite as it was and this just made her look deathly. So i scheduled a vet appointment and was starting to freak. I had tried changing her food since sometimes my cats get picky and refuse to eat something till you find something else they like. But nothing was working. Then a few days before the vet could see her she started eating again but this time ravenously yet still not gaining any weight. Seemed almost like she was still losing weight. So we take her in and the vet runs some tests and says looks like your cat is diabetic. Not only that but she has severe (ketone?) lvls. That she's near deaths door and might not make it through the night. Refers us to a specialty vet hospital an hour away. Tells us that they've never seen a cat as young as ours (only three years old) and as healthy weight come down with diabetes.

That night we rush her to the ER an hour away. Once again they tell us that they don't think she's going to make it through the night and maybe we don't want to spend this several thousand dollars on her. We sign up for carecredit and tell them to treat her. She's our baby how could we not try! Then they say because she's so young for diabetes its most likely she has some horrible incurable disease causing the diabetes. So they schedule to test her for just about every disease for cats out there. They schedule a sonogram to check her organs they do tests on her kidneys, pancreas etc..
I'm of course in hysterics not understanding how a perfectly healthy seeming cat who's so young is suddenly so ill. To hear my baby might not make it through the night...

next morning i call the vet. They say she did make it through the night and miracle of miracles she responded to the insulin treatment extremely well. They decide to keep her for few more days to make sure she makes it through the ketones and stabilizes. They run all the tests and they all come back negative. She has no diseases other then the diabetes. They check the organs all healthy and well formed. It's just the diabetes. At this point we are relieved but nervous.

So now me who is horrible with blood and needles is learning to give my kitty shots twice a day.
The vet has her on lantus, 1unit twice a day. We've been feeding her at 7am/pm, giving shot at 7:30 am/pm, He's put her on the m/d diet. with her still being so underweight he said it would be better then the w/d cause it has higher protein. Luckily he has several other diabetic patients so seems to know what he's doing. We've ordered the ipet glucose reader and got it in the mail. Supposed to go in and be shown how to use it today and they are going to test her with it and theirs to compare them and make sure its doing close enough readings. I've been the paranoid mama that calls him crying. Several times now that i've given the shot but have done it wrong and gone through the skin and can feel the wetness on her furr afterwords. Usually in the am shot, i seem to do better in the evenings when my husband is there to help. We had a scare when she refused to eat anything before the shot. Having read on here quite a bit didn't give her the shot but then started panicking that she wasn't having her insulin. Call doctor in tears, doctor calms me down and says i made the right choice and to never give the shot if she doesn't eat. Has me start putting her food away during the day so she'll eat at shot times. Works perfectly and she starts eating at shot times the very next day.

Sorry for the novel lol. Glad to see this forum and all the support and information and most of all knowing I'm not the only one who's gone through or is going through this.
I love her so dearly i'm trying everything i can to help her. Ironically I'd never even heard of pets have diabetes before this. I thought it was just a human thing...go figure.

You are in the right place!!!!
You are going to get such great help and support here you won't even believe it. I have only been on here for a few days and I am doing so much better and so is my cat.

Welcome and take a deep breath! :) Sounds like you have an awesome vet too.
Here's a great read: (made me cry a lot, tearing up just thinking about it, such an awesome note from your cat to you!)

Read the stickies, go find your insulin support group (Lantus - I'm in there too!). You'll be doing great in just a few days with the awesome people on this board. I haven't close the window on my computer since I found it last Friday night. :)

Welcome Angel and Artemis to the FDMB family!!!!

Okay first off Breathe...now breathe again...there feel better :-D

If it helps any at all we all have arrived here right where you are right now, scared to death, completely freaked out and overwhelmed..It does get better it gets a lot better. So much better in fact that after I lost my first diabetic kitty I adopted not one but two diabetics from this very board.

Hang in there, others will be along shortly to offer more welcomes and give you a ton on information on eveything you ever wanted to know about treating a diabetic cat. I would run through the basics as well but I need to fly as it is time to go test and feed everyone here all 13 cats...Yep not only did I adopt two diabetics but have 11 other happy and healthy non-diabetics...that is how easy this can be.

Welcome Angel and Artemis,

I hope it will help to know we were all completely overwhelmed and terrified when we first found out our kitty had diabetes. But, with hometesting, a good insulin and a good diet, it becomes very manageable. We have lots of kitties here well regulated and some even go into remission.

It sounds like you have a very caring vet and he has prescribed a good mild, long lasting insulin. It has been well researched for us in cats. You might want to check out the stickies in our Lantus forum. Lots of info so best to print them off and read and reread. They are the starred topics below the grey line on this page: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=9

We like to feed wet lo carb food. A vet explains it very well on this website: http://www.catinfo.org We tend not to like prescription foods. It is very expensive and doesn't have any "prescription" ingredients. Most of us feed Fancy Feast, Friskies, Merrick, Wellness, Blue Buffalo. This chart has the carb values and we try to stay under 8-10% carbs.
Janet and Binky’s chart BUT we would not want you to change to an all wet lo carb diet until you are testing. The diet change can make a drastic reduction in the bg levels. Our Oliver went down 100 points overnight when we switched.

So we would like you to hometest. We do it like this: Video for hometesting It will let you know whether the dose you are giving will be safe and it will let you see how the insulin is working during the cycle. We have found that it is difficult to base doses on numbers gotten at the vet because most cats are really stressed at the vet and the numbers there are higher than they are at home.

Keep reading and asking questions. We wuld love to help you help your kitty.

Welcome to our family.... Welcome Welcome Welcome... Your story so hard for you, is almost what all of us did as we tripped over diabetes for the first time. It sounds like your vet is great and is stearing (sp) you in the right direction. I too always did the 7am/pm for testing... fed my Charlie then at 7:30am/pm gave him his shot.

You might want to tell your vet that you are concerned about shooting insulin without testing Artemis' blood glucose. I used a One Touch Ultra but there are many good ones out there. The monitor can't tell human blood from cat blood from bull's blood... but it measures the blood glucose accurately for all. We have someone who will send you our newbie kit... which will contain a meter, some test strips and other things to get "Extra" sweet Artemis going.

I'm hoping that as young as he is (I adopted Stevie a three year old diabetic, whose owner (definately not a care giver) said to put him to sleep)... I tested him, fed him the low carb Fancy Feast canned food (no need for prescription) However the prescription is a tad lower quality food than other brands... See Janet and Binky's food list on our home page... Stevie is now off the juice (he was only on for ten days) and is seven years old now.

Welcome and read... try to read the articles we have on our home page for reading... (((Hug)))

Thank you everyone. The welcome is much appreciated. Our vet does want us doing home testing. He had us get the ipet glucose meter.
Today we tested it against the more expensive one they have in the vet and it had the same results. Which is relieving. The vet had some problems getting blood from her ears or her paw using the lancet. The drops were too small for the meter to read.
Hoping i can figure out how to get better drops at home.
That video was super helpful I'm going to have my husband watch it tonight. We made a deal that he'd do the glucose readings since I'm bad with blood if i do the insulin shots lol.

A division of duties sounds like a plan!

Two things that really helped us -

Heat the ear. Warm ears bleed better. You can make a rice sack. Thinnish sock filled with rice , knotted and heated in the microwave until very warm but not hot. Hold it next to her ear for 30-45 seconds until nice and warm. You can also use a pill bottle filled with hot water. Either provide a good surface to poke against.

Use a big enough lancet. Humans can get by with 31 gauge, some beginning diabetic cats do best with 25-27 gauge.

Very few people get it on the first try. It took us an entire weekend of poking poor Oliver before we got a drop. If you have trouble, ask for ideas. We have lots!

Welcome....
3 long weeks ago I was right where you are. I was crying all the time, not sleeping & scared I might kill my cat (Baxter) with the insulin shots. I was terrified of needles (one reason I havent got botox). My vet would not let me leave his office until I gave Baxter his first shot. I thought I might pass out when I admin the first one. The vet then sent me home with a case canned M/D....its still sitting the pantry floor. Then the pm shot came...I started shaking, thought I might pass out & throw up on myself. I made it through with the strength of God & knowing I was helping my best friend. I did lots of reading. More reading then I did receiving my college degree. I wanted to get educated so I could relax & just breathe. I also, started posting on FDMB to receive advice. The message board helped me from calling my vet at all hours. There are so many wonderful people here with tons of experience. I think they are angels!! They help me breathe!!
In short....I had to over come my fears in order to help my best friend. You will do the same. You can do it!! Just take your time when your giving the insulin & home testing. Give your Kitty lots of love. cat_pet_icon

Good Luck!!

Jenn & Baxter

I started with 31 gauge thinking it would help Duncan not feel it, but it was super hard to get enough blood and I was having to stick multiple times/sites each time to get a good enough drop. So, I went and bought 26 gauge and now I'm a one-shot wonder. And Duncan is a very nice cat about it, but recently will hold extra still because he knows he won't feel it as much if he is still. So, cats can learn too. Or at least learn to care less. Maybe after we both get better at it I will switch back to 31's but for now 26 is working great! :)

Welcome! We never want to be here, but finding the support here will be so valuable to you. You are already well ahead of the learning curve it sounds like and you have a pretty good vet too. Keep up the reading and learning.

I was terrible with needles and blood before this too. I would PASS OUT out the sight of a needle. My vet told me to sit down 3 times during our initial consultation on giving the shots because I turned so pale and she was afraid I was going to hit the floor. Our first BG testing at home... lets just say for a little ear prick, there was blood on the counter, the kitchen cabinet, my glasses.. everywhere but the meter. Smokey was mad and I was laying on the couch until I could stand up without passing out. I did get back up and get that test and now my little gray girl and I are old pros at it.

Artemis is lucky to have such great and momma and daddy willing to do what it takes to keep him happy and healthy!

Just wanted to say welcome to you and Artemis.....
Sounds like you have received lots of great advice and support already.
What a great vet to suggest home testing!!! Beans vet sent us home with script food, she liked it at first and the it was becoming a pain in the you know where to try to get her to eat that stuff.
This site suggested the Binkys list and low carb food, which is all she eats of canned now and does not have a problem with it at all. and neither does my pocket book. BTW...she is in remission and has been since her last shot on 5/24!!!
Keep us posted and so glad you found this site, it is the BEST place to be.
Furry hugs to ya both :YMHUG:

Welcome!

You're already going to be monitoring, which is great, and you're on a very good insulin. However, you will definitely need to change the diet. W/D is not appropriate for a diabetic at AT all. In fact, I am convinced the super high carb load is what caused diabetes in my Bandit in first place. The only prescription food that is appropriate for a diabetic cat is Canned Purina DM. But as others have said, the only thing you're paying for with the prescription food is the label--it's pretty much exactly the same as the cheaper low carb foods like Friskies, Special Kitty, or Sophistacat. You can get a premium food like Wellness, EVO, or Merrick's for less than what you're paying for the prescription stuff.

If weight gain is an issue right now, some of the higher calorie premium foods are great for this. Wellness Kitten, Turkey, and Chicken flavors are all excellent for weight gain (and diabetic safe), as well as any of the canned EVO flavors (stay away from the 95% Venison, though--it's really high in phosphorus). Really, though, any low carb canned food will work for you as long your cat is eating normal again--you just feed more food more frequently. I usually resort to the high calorie stuff only when one of my cats is not/cannot eat enough on their own to gain weight.
