Squeaky and KT (GA)

Very Active Member
Greetings to all 2 and 4 legs! I am 'Squeaky', aka Lyresa, our newly diagnosed sugarcat is 'KT', a beautiful, BIG flame and white Maine Coon mix. He was rescued as a kitten after riding 120 miles trapped in the brake control box of a Katy Railroad train thus his name. He's now 8 years old and is the sweetest furbaby we've ever had. He seldom gets upset about much of anything, is always soft pawed. When it's shot time, I show him the syringe, he understands and immediately lays down so I can give it. I believe he's been diabetic for quite some time but didn't really show us enough to realize there was something critically wrong until a little over a month ago. When we had the vet do a full blood panel, we discovered his blood sugar at 447. We began 3 units of Humulin N twice daily. We had hoped it was pancreatic lesions that would heal and get him off the juice. After a week on it, his number was down to 75. After 3 weeks, took him off for 2 days, sugar was right back up. The 'sort of' issue I have with the readings is that KT hates to travel, gets quite upset and complains the whole way - 20 minute drive. I'm wondering if those numbers were truly correct or if they were because of the stress. The 75 number sort of disturbs me - with the stress of the drive, was that actually HIGH and he was getting too low? I cannot yet afford the meter/strips to learn to hometest but I'm a'savin' up the pennies. We just can't do those trips with him often. If we can't get him off the juice, I do want to change to one of the other insulin's as we can afford to do so.

We are a retired couple on fixed income that live in a rural area where people come to dump their animals. Many find their way to our house in various conditions. We take them in and do the best we can for them. We also have an asthma cat as well as others with various conditions. We have LOTS of legs here - 12 cats and 7 dogs, all rescues from 1 year to 14 years old, some blind, some deaf but all very loved and happy. We never quite know how many cats we feed nightly as I put out 3 bowls in the back corner up high and all are gone each morning. There is a feral colony nearby but it's getting smaller and smaller as we slowly convert them. We find homes for as many as possible but if they've been thru too much, we keep them here forever.

Finding this board was a HUGE blessing - I feel like I'm home. Our vet is wonderful in any general illness but he's not the best at follow-up BUT, in his wonderful defense, he charges $10 for an office visit, $60 for a full blood panel and $40 for xray. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be able to begin to care for all our blessings. Unfortunately, he didn't tell me much about caring for a diabetic cat other than showing me how to do the injections in the scruff, drop the dry food and feed him soft food twice a day. I asked about home testing, he indicated it was done using the ear vein but wasn't easy. I'm learning SO much here.

I thank every one of you for taking time to post information and help - you let us keep and care for our babies. We also have quite a few Guardian Angels hanging around here and others waiting at the Bridge. I read a post somewhere about where the ferals go when they cross. I'll be gatherin' up and hugging every one of them that want to go on over the bridge with me! We'll make quite a grand entrance!

Hugs to everyone!

Hello gang

If you can't afford the blood glucose meter, there are Newbie Kits here handled by lori and tom viewtopic.php?f=28&t=19541

perhaps that could be something for you and KT?

cudos for doing all the good things for all that you are

Wow- your introduction- I could write it almost word for word- um..I'm new and haven't quite got around to doing that..but I am going to!

Our vet started Bobbie on the Humulin N also and like you I questioned whether her numbers at the vet were correct. We started home testing and that was the way to go! I don't think she would have lived a healthy life if we hadn't. We got the Relion meter at Wal~Mart. It was about $20 and came with lancets and 5o test strips. I had to buy strips for the first time this week- there were $20 so I think it is a good deal for that meter. They pretty much gave it to us.

I don't have much advice as we are new to this too. But I think you do need to home test. Our vet like yours, is low cost and because of all our rescues and that we are retired too, have to use them.

Welcome to you KT and the rest of your gang!

Waving Hi from one Country Lass with a Fur Gang to another Country Lass and her Fur Gang.

Okay you have me beat on the woofers, but 12 cats here as well, 2 sugars, 10 civies (non-diabetics) and only large hound that believes he is just an oversized cat...lol.

As stated above we have a newbie kit program here that can get you the stuff you need to start testing KT at home, and it even comes with a special gift for KT himself! Lori usually asks nothing more than the price of shipping (around $7) but she will happily waive that if there is a need, and she is quick about getting them out as well.

We would be delighted to teach you how to use it as well, in fact since we have members literally all over the world, if you give us just a general location, (city & State) we can see if we can round up someone to pop by and help you out. Testing at home can really keep the pennies in your pocket as well as mke sure Mr. KT is safe while on insulin.

Now I'm sure others will ask, but what is Mister Handsome eating, diet is one of the critical pieces to this puzzle. My entire gang (except the woofer) is on just good old fashioned Friskies Pate style canned food. While Humilin is a fairly inexpensive insulin it isn't real good for kitties, although we have a few that use it and have gotten good results. Most here use Lantus, Levermir or PZI these are all long lasting and more gentle than N. Both my sugarcats are/were on Lantus. Maxwell, the good-looking fellow pictured in my Avatar has now been in remission for 8 months, and my newest little one Musette is being a bit of a puzzle but also doing nicely.

There is another program here DCIN (Diabetic Cats In Need) that help out with insulin and testing supplies for kitties that need a helping paw. Venita & Tucker's Mom handle that. So that is something you might want to look into as well. They also help rehome extra sweet kitties that their people no longer want, that is how I came by my two sugarcats. Now you know if it wasn't something that was very doeable I wouldn't have volunteered to take on not one but two. :-D

I'm sure others will be along shortly with lots of links for you to read, and a ton of questions. But I wanted to just welcome you to the family.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette, Amon Ra, Patches, Casper, Bert, Tre'Vona, Sophia, Angel, Duvessa, Myrrdin, Lady Jane Grey, and the woofer King.

Re: Introducing 'Squeaky', KT and the rest of the Furgang

THANK YOU for the welcomes AND for the info on the newbie kits. I remember reading it when I was still shoveling info into my brain from all of your postings but I read so much I couldn't remember where I read what.

They eat Friskies soft pate too - the OLD labels, not this new stuff!!! None of them will eat the stuff with the new label. Sometimes FancyFeast wet, Innova lower fat wet and Innova lower fat dry in small amounts. Treats are Butler skinless chicken softies but he doesn't care for them much - he'd rather have new sprout wheat tops which I grow for them. He has always been a hog for Whiskas dry 'purple food' chicken - I never realized how badly I was abusing his poor body with that. I let him get too fat for several years too - losing 4 lbs in 3 months alerted me to the critical nature. Hubby sneaks him a small saucer of Alpo dog food chicken gravy each evening not too long after insulin dose - that's their treat together. I'm not sure it's good for him but they so enjoy it that I hate to stop it. His weight is good now - 28" of body and 15 lbs.....with the KING of tails which waves like a huge fuzzy flag everywhere he struts!

Hugs to all!
Lyresa
