It's been a long time since I've been around here, though I've been stopping in a little to see everyone on PZI. But I've got a new guy I need to tell you about!

Spartacus is an 11 yr old neutered male DSH, an orinch boy! He was left at a nearby shelter where he was fortunate to have a caregiver that is experienced with diabetic kitties, AND DCIN. Their shelter partnered with DCIN to post him, and the proximity caught my eye. That concept of "there's no room at the inn" STILL hasn't stuck in my head, so I went to visit and check him out - to see if there was a chance he would be able to "hang" with my crowd. At the shelter, he was maintaining his dose for the last 2 of 4 (diabetic) years of 9u NPH insulin BID. Thank God he was eating kibble - it's probably all that saved him!

So it was decided he would come home with me that (Monday) night, a week & a half ago. Right before we were leaving, the shelter brought out his insulin - he was due for a shot. I quickly grabbed my meter/strips, and did a poke. 100. ONE HUNDRED! I think we'll skip his insulin for the night, thank you!!! Actually, we let him go for a few days without insulin to clear any residual from his system and to help him remember what it felt like NOT to be overdosed!

His coat was rough and dandruffy. Lots of mats. He was pretty much a couch potato. The first night he slept in a kitty bed on the floor of the laundry room. Not jumping or climbing. He eventually found his way to a chair with a blanket on it. He let me trim mats and do pokies. He went with my dog to the vet to check FIV/Leukemia - a prerequisite for my house. Both negative. His appetite was pretty poor - I was giving fluids, testing for ketones, and offering up a buffet, including his old kibble - anything to get him to eat. I was unaccustomed to a kitty that wasn't food-motivated! I finally resorted to some assisted feeding. That must've been it. Or maybe the Lev. We started him on .5u Lev (from 9u - OMG!), and he responded!

He has his own tab on Grayson's SS (in signature) if anyone would like to follow him. He's been holding between .75 and 1u, and getting down even to a green (which earned him some gravy food!)! I'm hoping he, too, can be broken (so far I'm 2 (diet-controlled) for 4! His personality is starting to shine through. He's a love! His coat is getting shinier, and he purrs like a tiger! What a sweet boy - and what a shame his people were misguided about his care... part of the reason they gave him up. I do plan to speak with his former vet... maybe in a few weeks if he's OTJ! Lots of thoughts in my head that I want to say, but I need a little time to tone them down first!

So that's his story. He's already met some of the resident kitties, and seen the dogs through the window and crate. He's now jumping up to the soft bed and the window sills (13" deep - perfect for kitties!). Another one saved by the things we learn here - start low - good insulin - good diet - home testing. I can't impress upon anyone the value of these... He's thriving in just over a week due to such little changes as that.

Woohoo Welcome Home Spartacus.

Hey Lu-Ann you knew I had new orinch guy too Cassanova formally K.C. Here's one for ya Cass was being shot blind 11 bid of LEVEMIR!!! He's at 1u now and a big lover not quite as big a lover as he was since I took 20lbs off him and he still weighs in at 17lbs. Yep he was 37lbs and a watermelon with feet. He's 8 yrs old and now acts about 8 months old.

I have one word for Spartacus....PICTURES!!!

He's having a great day! Contemplating smaller and smaller doses of insulin... and he's earning them as well! He's been averaging about 275 for his preshots, and nadiring... well... let's just say he & Grayson have been chatting. Yesterday they had similar nadirs; today, he got the numbers transposed. G 93; S 39!!! I shot .5u this morning, so I'm anticipating a fat .25 tonight... depending on where he goes... or maybe I'll start twisting drops off again! WOW! I guess I shouldn't be surprised... Grayson's brother Herb was diet-controlled after 7 days of insulin. We're just a little over a week, and he's looking like he's thinking about it too! :-D Maybe 3 broken diabetics will be the charm? ;-)

Two weeks on Lev and he's doing GREAT!!! His coat looks and feels STUNNING (except for those bald patches that were so matted they had to be shaved. I ran his 7-14-30 day averages from the meter... 7 day average is BLUE!!! Woo hoo!!!

He's currently getting either 2 or 3 drops LESS THAN .5u, so yes, another micro-doser! But he's eating well, climbing, jumping, insisting on lovin' and interacting well with the gang. He still prefers to eat by himself - I think he was on overload Monday when I offered him food with the others. Another kitty doing well on Lev/low-carb canned food/home-testing and love!

Thats a wonderful story-damn near made me tearful!
thank you for your kind heart. Keep us updated-
best of luck to you two-or 10 (don't know how many you have there-sounds like alot!)

Congrats Lu-Ann and Spartacus! Gotta love those orange boys. My sister also just brought home an orange (and white) boy from the shelter she volunteered at (not an FD) and I am very jealous of both of you! Sounds like he is doing great under your care.

OMG - 9u of NPH with no testing! Yet, that vet needs a lesson in FD management.

Spartacus continues to thrive! His timing wasn't great, but thankfully he's been VERY WELL-BEHAVED! My civie Peaches was PTS over Memorial Day, after 3.5 weeks of wrestling kidney failure and heart failure, first dx 4 days after S arrived. The whole time I was juggling meds, assisted feedings, fluids, and 2 for insulin shots, S didn't go to the moon (too much), nor drop too low more than a couple of times, and then he came right up, and nicely, with regular food. I'm certain he was pretty accustomed to carbing himself up, so I was pleased to see how nicely his BG moved with FF.

He prefers to eat in the laundry room, where he can eat at his own speed without competition, but is enjoying the back of the couch and hanging out with the rest of the kitties during the day. He's even decided that the dogs are okay! He may re-think that next week, when Jack and Dom will have some friends visiting! ;-)

So all is peaceful on the eastern front. Hug your kitties today!

Oh, Lu-Ann, he's a cutie! Why am I not surprised that you had room in your heart for him?!

Sorry to hear about Peaches. You've gleaned so much knowledge from taking care of your furkids, maybe you should be teaching some of these vets a thing or two! :-D

Libby - Spartacus just chilled from the moment he arrived. Nobody hissed at him, no body picked a fight, nothing! He was immediately one of the gang, though he prefers to eat alone (purring the whole time!). He and Grayson rode with me up to my mom's, and he earned the name "Saint Spartacus" (don't know that any other Roman warriors have such a title!). Meanwhile, Grayson hurdled mom's barstools/kitchen counter & got in on the white carpet! No sainthood for him, I'm afraid! But I was really impressed that he could jump that high!
