Lee Lu is 13 yrs old (born in 2001), and was dx in Oct 2013 when she was drinking a lot of water and excessive urination. I can't remember her exactly initial readings but they were in the 500s. We went with Vestilin first, got up to 9 units x2 daily and while she was better, definitely not stable (still in the 300-400s) while feeding Purina DM wet & dry. Finally got her off dry altogether, no more all you can eat buffet, and moved from Purina DM to BFF wet food pate styles. She loves it. Gobbles it up every time I feed her, never any appetite issues (in fact, I probably err on the side of underfeeding but she's not starving).
Currently, we are dosing 2 units of Lantus x2 daily. We are on the 2nd bottle, we've been on it since March. I'm using the Freestyle Freedom Lite reader, however I plan on changing the reader now that I'm low on strips. Except for the occasional urinating outside the litter box, her behavior is great, just like pre-dx. Eats, purrs, happy, lost a little weight (which is good, she was heavier than she should be).
I've been home testing her once a month since March. Her last two curve tests (in Aug and Sept) she dipped close to hypo after starting in the 200s. Last Saturday (9/21), she started at 216 at 7:45am (post meal but pre-shot), and her reads every 2 hours after were as follows - 167, 94, 54, 47, 31. I fed her between the 94 and 54 reading, and again between 47 and 31. I did give her 2 units of Lantus around 8pm Sat night. Her test read Sun morning at 7:56a post meal was 46. This is the first time she didn't upswing after nadir, and definitely the first time she's read under 100 in the morning. So, I did not give her insulin Sun morning and only 1u Sun night. For a couple days, she was in the 140-150 range with 1.5u. Then (mistakenly newbie idea), I thought "well, if 1.5u is going to yield a nice read of 148, then 2u will get me in the sweet spot of 100!" - wrong. Moved her to 2u and now she's reading at 189-211 (with 189 Thurs AM and 211 being Fri 9/26 AM). WHOOPS. So I will go back to 1.5u NOW knowing 140-150 is OKAY, and stick in there for 5 days. I promise! Must. Have. Patience!!
I have been tracking curve tests, and started tracking 2x daily tests pre-shot since Sunday. I will do the SS and include in a signature soon.
P.S. One light bulb moment I had today is the talk of stress induced diabetes. Just before Lee Lu was dx'ed, my live in LTR boyfriend and I broke up. We adopted her together in 2001, and now I'm thinking the breakup could have been contributing factor. The new LTR boyfriend and I have settled in since late April and she seems to be doing better in the last couple months.
Thanks Everyone!
Amanda
