I started mixing a little (about 20%) Wysong fish flavor dry kibble at Fridays dinner. His morning numbers are good but not PM's. I'm up to about 30% new food mixing as of this morning. He really likes the new food! I notice that he's eating that first. I adjusted his insulin this morning down to 5 u. from 5.5u. Still not sure if it's me having misfires on PM shot but I'm pretty sure I gave a good injection yesterday evening. Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Those are huge drops midcycle - more than 70%-80%. We usually 50% is about right. I definitely think he is bouncing. And probably the insulin is petering out before +12 The problem with N is that you can get a decent midcycle number sometimes but it means increasing the dose so much that he bounces too much for preshot. Two of the reasons it is so hard to regulate with N.

What is the status of possibly getting another insulin?

My husband wants to see how his numbers are once he's 100% on the Wysong. I also have to tell my vet that I'm in the process of switching his food (which he advised me not to do). I would like to talk to the vet about switching the insulin while we're at it. His +6 count taken a half hour ago was144. Now I'm wondering if I should've kept dosage at 5.5u. Thoughts?

Given how hard and fast Novolin hits, I'd leave it at the 5 units.

Better too high for a day, than too low for a moment. You have time to work with the former; the latter can be fatal quickly.

Showing when the insulin wears off will be important in convincing both your husband and the vet that a longer-acting insulin will work better.
When possible, try to snag tests around +8 to +10.

Can you try to set an alarm and catch a later test at night? It might be that the insulin is just kicking in later for some reason and you aren't catching its action on a test. Not normal for Novolin, but also not normal to see a cat with no reaction in any PM cycles.

Your vet may have advised you not to change your food because it may affect how much insulin you need to use. He will be giving you dosing advice based on what he thinks you are feeding (altho if he prescribed Novolin, I don't have a lot of confidence in his overall FD protocol). I'd make sure he knows before he recommends any more dose changes. Changing to a better food is good, just need to make sure your insulin dose reflects that. I think a 144 is probably a pretty good midcycle for Novolin.

A different insulin would definitely be good. Those preshot numbers are high and Novolin just doesn't last long enough to do much about them.

Ok. Thank you all. Now, question...as I increase the new food should I keep decreasing the insulin dosage? When? Watch the nadir? I'm increasing the new food a little bit more per day. So far no stomach issues or diareia. Those past pm Bg number at +3 are annoying. I know bounces. I'm hoping tonight's number will be better. I did just test at +9 and got 421 BG. Thanks.

I don't know that food so I can't say how much it will affect him, its not one I know to be low carb. Definitely stay on top of testing while introducing the new food and reduce the dose if you see the nadir going down.

Yes, nighttime numbers are a pain. I don't remember the last time I slept more than 4hrs straight. But the more data, but better we are able to understand what is going on and the better we can treat our kitties and get them feeling good again!
