Hi my name is Caren and I'm new to the FDMB. I have an older cat that was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 months ago. I like my vet but feel they don't know a lot about diabetes. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good vet to go to in the San Diego area that knows a lot about diabetic cats? I'm in East County if that helps at all.

Hi Caren,

I'm not in Ca but we have members there. How about going back into your original post, choose Edit and then add SO CA to your original subject?

If you do some reading, you'll see that many of us manage this disease at home, and go to the vet for insulin and emergencies. One of the most important things you can do is to test his blood sugar levels at home. We test our cats with a human meter and it's not expensive to do, or hard once you get started. We've taught hundreds of people how. We urge feeding wet low carb food ONCE you are testing at home ( levels can go down fast if the diet is changed and you want to be on top of his numbers). A vet explains the reasoning behind wet low carb here: www.catinfo.org

If you want, share some more info (like insulin type and dose and diet) and see if we can help

Is your vet willing to work WITH you and learn as you learn? If so, you may be able to keep using her. But if your vet is believes it's his way or the highway, changing could be for the best.

My vet had little experience with FD so I read a lot and learned a lot from this site. I printed information for my vet, who found the FDMB info very helpful as a basis for questions she asked other vets. She even called her alma mater to check on the info. We worked and learned together.

Hi Caren, welcome to FDMB.

If your vet is willing to become updated, print a copy of the 2010 AAHA Guidelines and share it.

If it turns out you need to find a new vet, one option is to do a Google search like this:
Veterinarian near Address
Where you put in your address to see who is close.
Then, in my signature is a link to Vet Interview Topics which you can use when interviewing possible vets.

What insulin are you using?
What dose and how often?
What are you feeding and how often.

Thank you everyone. My vet is working on learning as I learn so perhaps I should just stick with her. I'm just a nervous first time diabetic cat owner. Now that I have joined FDMB I'm beginning to feel a little more confident. It's nice to know there are others out there.

Hopefully you're vet will work with you. My vet gave me insulin, syringes, told me to feed low carb and the link to this web page. I would basically tell her what I was doing according to advice from here and she was fine with it. In the end it all worked out for Dusty. :-D
