Hey Everyone it's me again. As some of you remember I have a female cat Missy approx 10 yrs old. She was diagnosed with diabetes in april. She is not getting better. She is now on her 3rd insulin change. She has takin Hudin N was up to 7 units. Lantus went up to 5 units and now a new script for Prozinc 3 units. Still loosing weight eating and drinking very well. I had all her blood repeated about 2 months ago everything ok there. Her sugar is in the mid to upper 200's She urinates still like a hose. she was aprrox 15 lbs before now she's down to 10 lbs. I tried to give her can food she won't eat it. Tried all kinds. tired to give her raw or boiled chop meat and chicken and all other raw and cooked meats she smells it and walks away. She however will eat science diet adult hairball control. She loves it her and her sister and brother eat a huge bowl everyday with her getting the lions share. any suggestions. Her sugar is stuck at that number. the doctor wants to get it down to under 200. Thanks

The Science Diet (junk) is likely what is keeping your cat's bgs too high. The one you are feeding has 40% carbs per cup :o To counteract all those carbs, a really high dose of insulin would be needed but you also risk hypos at the same time.

Dr. Lisa's web site has info on how to transition a cat to canned food: http://catinfo.org/docs/Tips%20for%20Tr ... -18-09.pdf The key is lots and lots of patience and determination on your part. Some stubborn cats may take months to accept canned food.

Can you feed a lower carb dry food such as Innova EVO or Wellness CORE? It will improve bgs levels a bit. Watch bgs closely if you start a lower carb dry food. Some cats may have quite a drop in bgs.

My cat was a very picky dry food eater and I had a hard time transitioning her to canned.
She loved Innova EVO dry- grain free food. It can be purchased at specialty pet food stores. The web site has a search to look for stores in your area.

To transition your cat to EVO, mix 1/2 of the SD with 1/2 of the EVO at first, then do less and less SD.
Once your cat is use to that food and the cats weight is stabilized, try giving canned food before you put out the dry.
Mixing water in the canned food helps. Then maybe eventually you can get your cat off the dry.

If your cat insists on only dry food - EVO dry is better than the high carb science diet and has better ingredients.

Are you hometesting everyday?

I agree with switching over to EVO dry for now. It's also a little more calorie dense and may help add some weight on your kitty which would help combat some of that weight loss.

When you did the bloodwork did the vet run a T4 to see what the thyroid levels are?

oh my, i did'nt even think that you may not yet be hometesting. if your not press the newbie kits link in my post and see it we can get you all hooked up to do that.
that would make a HUGE difference.

She however will eat science diet adult hairball control.
This is what gave me a diabetic kitty, taking it away is what gave me a diet controlled kitty.

My Smokey LOVED that SD and I felt like a meany taking it away. But when the choice is to continue to have uncontrolled diabetes or regulation with possible remission, that food left the house pretty fast. We mixed the SD and Purina DM about 50% at first and only left out about half a cup a day, diluted that again with DM within a week so that there were only a few pieces of the SD out at one time. While we did we also started meal fed wet food. After 2 weeks we took the hard away and only gave a few pieces of the DM when we had a kitty refusing to eat.

Please reconsider a food change. Getting rid of the high carb hard food is the biggest step towards having a diet controlled kitty. Both you a Missy must be exhausted from the long dance of uncontrolled FD.
