I know your not to give insulin without eating... but Ham's BG is crazy high and I do not want him to have DKA again so my question is: is it ok to give him insulin with a little food? I am force feeding him. I just tried giving him a can of salmon and he only took a couple of bites. :banghead:

I was told it is ok to give a half dose when Gizmo wasn't eating. Hopefully someone more experienced will be able to give you more advice ... as Gizmo doesn't have a history of DKA.

A half dose is my recollection as well in these situations. I agree DKA is a concern if you skip altogether. Looks like you skipped this morning as well?
How soon is Ham's normal PM shot time?
Hopefully someone else can weigh in before then.

Not sure where those highs are coming from all of a sudden - infection? inflammation? Could you try syringe feeding him a little and then give maybe 0.5 u? With DKA in his history you don't want to skip insulin when BG is high. It's not a problem if the shot is late. You can work it back in 15 minute increments starting tomorrow AM.

Yes Kris that was my question. But with it being so high just a 0.5u or the full 1u? I can check him all night and keep syringe feeding him small amounts

I think most people are enjoying the holiday weekend and it's a snoozy time on the board. It looks like the consensus here is .5 units since he is not eating, I think it's the safest bet between giving the full dose or nothing. I know you're waiting to shoot, and shooting late acts like a reduction anyway. I've been here since September and not nearly as experienced as others, but going off of what was said in this thread, seems like a more logical dose than 1 unit. I would also make sure he eats a little here and there if you can help him do that.

Thanks... I went a head and just shot 1u. Due to the fact it was late and his BG was so high. I am going to keep an eye on him. I will make sure he gets a little food every couple hours. If he's still not eating in the morning I'll shoot 0.5u... Hopefully his BG will be lower then.

His BG is down to 357 and I just gave him about a syringe and a half of food.
Glad he's coming down for you. :cat: Go down gracefully, Ham (and Amanda, do not let him peep at Asia's SS, lest he get any ideas). ;) Hope he wants to eat soon or you can continue to help him get some food down. :bighug:

One thing to consider is giving him higher carb food. When Neko was iffy on eating, I would syringe 8-9% carb food. That way I could give her regular dose but keep her numbers higher. Good luck. :bighug:

The vet gave me prescription diet urgent care a/d. They said it was lower in fat and higher in calories. He ate a bite or two yesterday maybe that's why the higher BG?

A/D is medium carb food. Not high enough carbs to make a large difference, especially if he only ate a bit. It helps to put any changes in food or meds in the Remarks column of the SS, so we can see if there are any things that might impact the numbers. Glad to see he's blue today. How is his appetite?

Still no good... He's very lethargic... he did eat a couple votes of tuna earlier. I'm about to go get him check his PMPS and feed him. We are going to try a new vet in the morning... I just hope they see us without an appointment

Sorry to hear that. :bighug: Good luck with a new vet. Odd question, but more to eliminate something, has the vet ever heard a heart murmur in Ham? Lethargy and no appy were signs Neko showed when she first had heart issues. You can also count the number of in and out breaths per minute. It should be below 30.

Would that lead to his anaeia as well??

I'm sorry Ham isn't feeling well, hope the vet can squeeze you in if you say it's urgent. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

The new vet gave him Convenia and Dexamethasone to try to raise him RBC and get him to eat... She said he has a mass in his stomach that can either be a tumor or an enlarged spleen. No way to know for sure without an ultra-sound and I can afford that right at this moment. And I'm not sure I can afford to treat either.. but we're not there yet.
