Hi Everybody,

We're down to about 100 units in our Lantus Insulin pen, and giving 2.25 units twice a day. So it's time to start shopping.

Where can I obtain the pens at the best price?

Should I order from the vet?

Doesn't it have to be kept refrigerated? So mail order is NOT an option, correct?

How long does it keep?

New at this; advice welcome.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Jan

Most of us are buying our Lantus from Canada because it's 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

Marks ships in a special insulated envelope with a medical grade ice pack. They also put a temperature gauge in that will show you if it went over 80 degrees any time during shipment.

When I first found Marks, it was late June and I was almost out of Lantus so I ordered it. There were 2 holidays and a weekend so it took about 10 days to get to me (Missouri...90 degrees plus every day). I was still able to use every drop in all 5 pens.

They will also put it into a special cooler if you want to pay extra but it's not really necessary unless it's really hot.

There's a video in the post I linked that shows how they ship. They are fantastic and have saved a lot of sugarcat's lives by making it more affordable! Their customer service is great too!

I second Mark’s!

Thanks that sounds like a good idea, Canada. I order Squeaky's inhaler from a pharmacy in the South Pacific, Vanuatu. Works great. Been ordering from there for 10 years.

I suppose if I'm using 5 units a day x 40 days that is one pen. So We will be using about one pen a month.

So how long does the insulin keep? Should I stock up?

Like I said you are better off buying the 5 pack of cartridges or the 5 pack of pens
They will last you way over a year
After your vet writes the first script you won't ever need another script.
Call them and will tell you what to do

When you order from Marks (5 pens most likely the expiration dates right now
would be 2021 and 2022. Depending on your dose one pen could let 4-6 months.
Keep then in the refrigerator and they will all last until the expiration date.
It's worth the money

Apparently I've been hijacking all the threads lately and maybe I should start my own for this question but can the insulin be good after the expiration date if I never even opened it or did anything with it? I have some pens that I think I won't get to before they expire but am wondering if they would still be good after the expiration date if they're just sitting in the fridge, never messed or touched with?

Each pen holds 300 units so a box of 5 is a total of 1500 units. At 2.5U twice a day, 1 pen would last you about 60 days.

Thanks everyone!!! Well I ordered the 5 pack. Then the wonderfully kind and generous Diabetic Cats in Need sent me 2. So I have 7 and I think we are set for a while. Actually I hope Squeaky goes into remission long before I can use all of them. Patience pants, though.
