Insulin prescription question???

I know that Lantus and Levemir both require prescriptions. Does anyone know if any of the other insulins, that are used for cats, can be bought somewhere without a 'script? Like Prozink, etc?

Being as it is a constant battle to regulate Lucian, I was curious if there was something that could be tried that didn't require a 'script. I have the 'R' of course, that doesn't require it. Wondered if there was one that is longer acting that didn't.

Just weighing out my options, since I can't pay for a vet visit.

Edit: After reading for the past 4 hrs, I'm guessing that the 'R' is the only thing available without a 'script?
 
N-type insulins, which last about 6-8 hours in the cat - Humulin, novolin, Humalog, Novalog - may be available without prescription in your state. They hit hard with a fast drop, wear off fast, and you'd be shooting every 6-8 hours.

This type is more useful as an adjunct. You could try one of these in place of R, as it lasts longer. You'd check around +9 for spiking, then if needed, give a small bolus of the N. Initially, you'd monitor the curve with the N, as you did with the R.
 
I saw that in your 'dosing options', I'm guessing the difference in the N and R is the length of time they last? R being 4-5 hrs (+-) and N being 6-8 (=-)?
 
Exactly. From shortest to longest average duration:
R - 4-5 hours
N - 6-8 hours
Vetsulin/Caninsulin 8-10 hours
ProZinc/PZI - 10-12 hours
Lantus & Levemir - 12 or more hours
