I have an unopened vial of Insuvet Protamine Zinc Insulin with a manufacturer's expiry date December 2010. Is it still OK to use this vial and if so how long after the expiry date is it safe to use it? Mary
I never uses that particular type of insulin but I have used PZI Vet and Lilly's U inulin well past their expiration date with any problems. If you are home testing then you should be able to tell if it is working fine.
It is supposedly [per the mfr] only good until the expiry - 2 years from the date of manufacture. I've never used ProZinc past the expiry and I doubt anyone here has since it's a new insulin and been on the market maybe less than two years now??
It's viability is going to be influenced by things like how it was cared for [kept out of the light] and the temperature it was stored at as close to 40F as possible.
After the expiry all bets are off. But you could try it and see if it works like your last bottle. If it poops out then it's done.
For reference the old PZI Vet had a 3 year expiry and the new ProZinc has a 2 year expiry. So not sure if you can get lucky and capture any of the differences there in what the mfr says. ;-)
Let us know your results if you chose to use it past the expiry.
