Insulin apparently only works at night?

Good morning all!
As many of you know, I've been having enough problems trying to exert some semblance of control on my buddy Lou's BG numbers. In worrying about glucose toxicity, I have been trying to see what higher doses will do for his sugars (most specifically where they peak, since I cannot seem to get him within normal range during nadir). I have been seeing some success after his PM doses only insomuch as I am getting blues, not that they are close to where I need them.

Now another problem is apparently, his BGs are doing next to nothing during the day. I didn't catch a decrease at all yesterday, and now today his +4 is only 20 points lower than his AMPS. Has anyone heard of this type of thing happening?

If it were my cat I would try 2 units when he was above 250 for the preshot and see what happens. It's not unusual for them to run different at night compared to the day.

Hi Amanda! I've actually had a similar experience. Seemed like nothing moved during the day sometimes but he did move at night . I think I did drop increases so if it was at 1.0U, I would increase to Fat 1.0, then Skinny 1.25, then 1.25. I'm very near sighted so it's helpful when doing those little adjustments lol. Just try to do any increases when you can monitor him a bit and I wouldn't hold a dose more than 3 days. I hope Lou responds and not too drastically

Thanks for the responses Janet and Yong! Thankfully he finally went lower, but at +7.5, which is kind of insane for him (the latest I've seen him peak was at +6, and that doesn't happen often). I can get my day mid-range tests on my days off, but it seems like he's always doing something weird when I can get those tests in, so this weekend was no exception, haha.

I've been trying to increase, but perhaps I've been too much of a chicken about it. I found it strangely hard for me this morning dosing the 1.5 u, as I had only gone up to 1.25 before he started decreasing his preshots. I think in my head, anything higher than that equals hypo (from our own hypo experience in the beginning). I know logically that's silly, but I think subconsciously that's why I've been more cautious when I have plenty of data showing how he's not reacting as simply/easily to the insulin as he did prior to his failed OTJ trial. So long story short (too late!), I'll put my big-girl panties on and try a higher dose to get him more into the blues again. Hopefully we'll see some success and I can get my buddy Lou feeling better (I've been starting to see some of his pre-diagnosis symptoms come back recently - increased appetite, thirst, and urination). Fingers crossed!
