Insulin and BG curve

Hi all,

I posted a while back and got some useful suggestions and was hoping to get some insight now. My cat, Sherwood, finally had some good numbers last week getting down to 115 at one point, but his numbers are back up this week. Wondering what is going on. Yes, I know probably an underlying condition, but I am wondering about the one week good and now back up. He is on 14 units of Levemir twice a day. But even when his numbers were good he was having great difficulty walking. He stays close to his food and water all day and has found a nearby spot to do his business (won't use the kitty litter I put there). Was so hopeful with the good numbers last week! Does anyone have an idea?

Is it possible for you to take him to the vet? When a cat uses the bathroom in unusual places, it can be a sign of a urinary tract infection, or worse. They associate the litter box and the litter with pain, so they move to a new spot. (I had a cat who would pee on the bed when the got a urinary tract infection.)

I'm also worried about his problem walking. Is he stiff? Does he limp?

Since this is a day old, you could post a new thread. Put the date on it, so people will notice that it's new. Also select the ? prefix, and put "help" in the title. You might get more answers that way. Something like "5-20 Sherwood - AMPS (number) - Help needed - trouble walking, won't use litter box"

I hope Sherwood feels better soon.

Have you talked to the vet about getting testing done for acromegaly and IAA (insulin auto antibodies)? We suggest that when cats get over 6 units of insulin, that people get those tests done. The test results will help us answer your questions.

I see you are getting quite a few mid cycle tests, but missing a lot of the preshot tests and hardly any tests at night. Cats on Levemir often nadir around preshot (my girl did that a lot). We strongly recommend testing before the shot, so you know it's safe to give the shot, plus with Levemir it can sometimes help tell you how low the dose is taking the cat. We determine how to change doses based on how low the dose is taking the cat. For that same reason, we strongly recommend getting tests at night, even just before bed. May cats go lower at night.

Because Levemir onsets later, if you have a black or red preshot, you probably don't need that +2 test. It's not telling you anything. Looks like he might be onsetting around +3, so I'd test then instead, and based on whether there is a big drop between preshot and +3, decide when to test later. You are using the AT which expensive test strips, so I'm also trying to save you some money with less tests during the day. And you can replace those with preshot tests and some spot checks at night.
