Injection sites

Ok..my vet told me to give the injection in the scruff of the neck/shoulders. This site says "Either side of the spine, between the scruff and the hips, and at least an inch away from the backbone, is also good and along the abdomen is excellent."

Do I still pull up for some scruff if I do the inj on either side of the spine?

People shoot different places and feel one site may be easier, provide better absorption than the other. Some people change it up. We always shot in the scruff of the neck, pulling up skin for a tent.

My other question for today: I had unwittingly switched Louie to a low carb diet a few weeks before I took him to the vet and found out he has diabetes. So...I dunno what to do...I'm getting so overwhelmed again...reading all the nutritional stuff....

A low carb diet doesn't mean instant remission. Some cats who are regulated but never have been in remission have been on low carb for years. It helps to keep bg levels lower in almost every cat. Great that you switched before. Now to get some numbers!

he stopped eating the friskeys pate that I've had him on for a couple months. I have given him ff classic. he gobbled up the cod, sole and shrimp for a couple meals, now wont touch it. tried ff oceanwhite fish and salmon. he wont eat chicken turkey or beef of any brand. Tried authority/wellness chick/turk-nothing. This morning i opened 3 different cans of food to try to entice him so I could give him his shot. He barely ate, and I had to give him shot and go to work. Ive been reading all night about the nutritional needs, etc and read that the fishy foods are actually bad because of the potental allergens and chemicals. He won't eat the other stuff...technically I haven't offered him rabbit...but I doubt I ever will.

up until this point in his life, I have allowed grazing. I'm considering changing this...although it will affect my other cat as well.

I just don't know what to do about getting him to eat...you know cats rarely do anything on command, lol.

Do you have ketone strips? If so, get a reading. If not, get some. Not good when a diabetic refuses to eat. Try crumbling up some of his dry on the wet. He has to eat for you to give insulin.

You can let them graze by freezing the wet or using an automatic feeder

his lab work showed no ketones last thursday. would he develop them since then? and he's eating...a little at a time throughout the day...just not when I want to give injection. he's gone from 9.6lbs thurs to 10.4lbs last night...

Well, that sounds better - at least he is eating something. With N, because it hits so hard, you want food on board.

Have you tried Parmesan on top, heating it in the microwave?

Yes, ketones can develop fast. You should have the strips anyway and be testing every so often, more when he is not eating.

I think I would crumble a little dry on top to see if he will start to eat again.

He will barely eat dry food now that I've switched him to wet. I haven't heated it though, nor have I put parmesian. Does it need to be fresh parm? Or the canned that you put on pascetti?

You know...I don't know of anything he likes on a consistent basis. I actually don't really treat my cats. Louie used to be overweight, so he didn't get many treats. Then he lost weight so rapidly, now I don't know. I was thinking of getting people tuna and putting that in his canned...

Give it a try. Whatever it takes. He has to eat. Fix some of the seafood into another flavor? What about the ketones? Can you test for those?

Did I see that you are getting ProZinc instead of N? That would be so good.

Hello Sara,

Hope this am finds you and Louie well. I have some ketone sticks that I could share with you. I will need to count and see how many. I will bring them to you tonite if you would like. It is Thursday, and wont hurt me at all to stay up a bit late - lol! Would really not want to wait til Saturday. Just let me know if you would like to do that...

He eating any better today??

I will call the vet on the PZI this am and find out some information - expiration, etc. What type of syringes are you using? This kind of PZI uses u100 which is totally different than the usual as I am to understand - most of the time it is u40. I have a box of syringes too if you dont have the right ones.

When I tented for Bean, I just could not find the correct area to shoot. I asked for advice here and found that I could shoot the 'top' of the tent and that was fine. What length size is the needle you are using??? my is a shorter length 5/16, not the 1/2". That was how I was able to shoot from the top.

I will update up after hearing from the vet.

Keep us posted on Louie
