hi all

I've been here a few days, already have learned so much. Thank you!

I'm curious where people are injecting their insulin please. I inject nape/scruff without difficulty and 99.99% of the time my cat doesnt notice. My vet recently suggested i try for the flank for better absorption, but my cat is very sore in his hind quarters, whether from his arthritis or poor diabetic management, and when i did give it a try he objected most strongly. I told vet, and she said try around shoulder area.

So please where do you all inject and do you find it affects absorption?

Thanks again!
Jen

I use the scruff and shoulders. I can't ever seem to get a pinch of skin on the flank so that doesn't work for me. Squallie has been on two different types of insulin, and I have never noticed, with either of them, any particular difference in absorption rate from site to site. If there was a difference it was small enough for me not to notice, I guess.

I usually roatate the injection between the shoulders or his flank.

I read somewhere (years ago) that the scruff wasn't the best place to inject because it had slower absorption because of the thickness of the skin there? But, that was like 7 years ago and I can't recall where that advice came from (I'm sure I read it in some thread on the old FDMB message boards).

EDIT: Found where I read it 7 years ago! Amazing! It was here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/injections.htm

Most people, including veterinarians, make the mistake of injecting the insulin into the scruff of the neck. This area has a very poor blood supply and insulin absorption is thus rather erratic from this area. Use an area further back around the hips or flank or, ideally, on the sides of the stomach. Try to rotate sites also, because repeated injections in the same site can cause a "granuloma" or knot of tissue that has poor blood supply (which means the insulin isn't absorbed well).

Wow good job finding that old link!

well today i shot morning dose into right shoulder. I'm out of my comfort zone anywhere besides the scruff. I'm unsure i'm doing it right and worry that i'll hit a vessel.

Thank you everyone
