Injection site

Hi all

Curious where you inject kitty. And do you alternate areas. I was told to do in the scruff between the shoulder blades, alternating each shot.

Just wondering if you've noticed areas on kitty where you inject that don't seem to be efffective as other areas. What I mean is the insulin doesn't seem to work as well when injected in certain areas.

Thanks

I inject Chuck by his right shoulder. I grab right below the scruff and shoot on the right. I move around on the same side. Almost in a circle like a clock's numbers.
I tried back by his back leg/belly area and he hated it. I've seen where some say the scruff doesn't have as good of blood flow as the other sites. Only way to see is to try the other sites and keep track of where you were shooting for that time. If you see a difference, pick the best site for your cat. :cat:

We alternate between scruff and side of chest/flank. Before we only used the scruff, but Gandalf developed a fatty lump from us not being able to vary the injection site enough. It settled after a few weeks and know we use mostly the sides.

When I first starting shooting, my vet told me to shoot in the scruff so I have been doing that for the past 6 years...the vet didn't tell me about rotating injection sites (I didn't learn that until becoming active on the FDMB recently.) Due to the constant shooting in his scruff, he has developed a fatty lump there. I have switched to injecting him in the flank, flipping sides each time. I'm not sure that I've noticed any increase or decrease in effectiveness, but I supposed you *could* say it has been rather effective if you look at Moose's SS. Not sure that his numbers have anything to do with the new injection site though, and more so the transition to 100% wet LC food.

Hey there. I was mainly shooting the shoulders and just recently added the scruff to the rotation only because I was concerned with scar tissue and absorption. It is a good practice to rotate areas but, some kitties do not like certain areas so you'll have to experiment with it as ECID.

Yeah, my vet said they absorb better in the belly. I don't think I want to try that, at least yet. He's really noticing when I go to give him a shot now. Not as much excess scruff/loose skin as before, and with the fur shots I've given him I have to kind of search for a good site. He's on to the whole process now and he meows and moves when I/ go to tent the skin. You would think things would get easier as times goes by, but no...

It could sting, Lantus is acidic and the higher the dose, the more potential for sting.

Do you give a little treat after the injection? Maybe that would help him to start to associate the shot with treat time and be less wiggly.

I rotate between left side front, left side back, right side front, right side back. When her night numbers were consistently higher last summer, I thought maybe the front side was better than the back side, but my theory did not hold up to testing. I shoot her right when she digs into her food---she sometimes might pull away a bit, but she never lifts her head from the food. She flinches occasionally when I push in the needle (I use short 6mm needles), but so far not when I inject the Lantus (15 units).

The only treats he likes are temptations, won't eat anything else. I was told no more treats so I'm really trying to stick to that.
