Injection Sarcoma

Hi all,

it has been a really long time that I haven’t posted on this message board. After one year or perfect health and diabetic remission, my 15 year old Lilli has developed a mass on her right shoulder that I have noticed while petting her.

Vet has advised to remove it and do a biopsy. I have read it might have been caused by insulin injections? Has anyone every experienced anything like this?

I am quite devastated and wonder whether I could have pretended it. Lilli is not taking any injections since last November and she has been off insulin ever since. BG is alright, vet has measured it and I have always been measuring it regularly to check her remission.

please advise! :(
 
I have "heard" of an injection sarcoma being caused by insulin injection in humans but never in cats. I have known caretakers who had injection sarcomas cause by rabies vaccines with an adjuvacant. Theoretically injection sarcomas can be cause by repeated injection caused by needles.

My Wiggles has small lumps in injection sites that come and go. You be due to Lipohypertrophy.
"A. Lipohypertrophy is a medical word for a lump under the skin from a buildup of fat at the site of insulin injection or infusion. This comes in the form of lumps or bumps under the skin. Scar tissue, or hardened areas, may also develop at the sites."

I think all injections have the potential to cause a sarcoma in cats although rabies and feline leukaemia virus injections are the most common one to cause the problem, but even then they are rare.
I always ask that my cats get all injections in the hind leg so that if anything did occur, the leg could be amputated.
I can imagine how worried you are about this but it is possibly something less serious. I do hope so. :bighug:

That's why I'm afraid of Panzer getting the rabies vaccine which they are really pushing me to. I lost 2 cats to sarcoma tumors.

The vet told me it's actually quite common.. In any case, it's horrible. She had just gotten into remission and now she's sick again. I wish there was something I could have done to prevent it.. Did anyone deal with feline cancer? Please let me know your thoughts..

vet did a biopsy by getting out the liquid with a syringe and he is unsure. He said best option is to operate and take it out and then he will do a biopsy on the mass. But in any case, he will operate.
 
If he aspirated liquid from the mass, that sounds more like a cyst. Did he comment on that?
I’m glad he is going to take it out and send it away for analysis. Please let us know how it all goes.
