My kitty has been very ill, just came back from vet last night. Last evening shot went very well, this morning after I gave him the shot I touch his side and felt the lantus on my fingers, so now I am really worried I made it come back out of injection hole and he didn't have the full amt of insulin.

Im sorry your kitty has been ill. We refer to that as a fur shot, when you feel the wet Lantus on the fur ... It happens to all of us. Don't give any more insulin this morning, you don't know how much went in. You can get back on track with the shot tonight. You may see higher numbers because of the fur shot, but like I said, you'll get back on track.

Have a god day,
Kathie

If you add "Ottawa" to your subject line, that will let people know where you're located. I haven't gone to check, but I hope you also posted this on the Health board.

I hope Simke is doing better.

I'm sorry about the furshot, and that Simke has been ill. It'll be OK...like Kathie mentioned, you'll be able to get back on track tonight. It happens to all of us :YMHUG: .

Sounds like a fur shot unfortunately. When you insert the syringe, feel around behind it to make sure its not poking out the other side. Slowly press the plunger. Hold it for a few seconds then remove. Press your finger to the spot for a few seconds.

Tonite, if your schedule permits, you could test and shoot early if he is high - maybe 2-3hours early?. But that means you would be working with this new shot time and would have to move the shot gradually 30mins a day till you get back to the original time.

How is his eating today?

It wasn't a fur shot, I know it was in as I have shaved him so I know it went in. But after I pull the needle out I thought I should rub it in but maybe some if it came back out the hole?

No need to rub it in after the injection. Wendy's suggestions are good ones. I had to learn to push the plunger and hold it for a few seconds, myself.

I know when we first started, Buster wasn't fully hydrated and I had some insulin leak out on more than one occasion. It seemed to me I had fewer problems when he got a little healthier and his skin wasn't so loose. Then again, it could also have been that I was getting better at giving the injections. At any rate, I be sure to add water to his food so he stays well hydrated.

Stick with it! It will get better! :YMHUG:

Glad it went better tonight! I do remember hearing somewhere that it's actually not a good idea to rub the injection site...something about how it can disrupt precipitate that forms under the skin. Don't quote me on that, though. Maybe/hopefully someone who knows for sure will pop in and confirm that. In the meantime, I would avoid rubbing the injection site, just in case.

Have a great evening!

Thanks so much everyone, held plunger in for a bit seemed to work well. :). He is much bright tonight.

Yeah!!!!

Great job, Simone! The other ladies are correct...you don't want to rub the injection site.

Are you tenting to inject? I find that using the roll method can help decrease fur shots. Instead of tenting, you want to raise the fur and skin with the hand you don't use to inject. Then roll your hand backwards so the back of your hand faces the back of his head. This should expose the skin. Keep lifting and inject into the subq layer....at a slight angle but parallel to the spine.

I found that Sweetie tolerates the roll method better than the tent method for the shot.

Glad it went smoother tonight - it just takes a little practice

Yeah!!!! He looks pretty good again this morning. 25.8, but head up and waking normally, he has a belly but no weight along his back at all. He'll eat if I don't put potassium in his food. :)
