Hi everyone,
I've posted a few times about my foster cat
Tigger who still continues to have ups and
Downs hopefully in the near futur I can get
Him regulated. I work at a no- kill shelter
And today a 14 yr old diabetic came in who
Has never been treated on insulin and an
Owner who could careless about him n-e ways
I'm sure we will be able to care for this guy
But do not want him to live the remainder of
His life in a cage I'd like him to live a wonderful
Rest of his life. Is there any rescue or sanctuary
Or even a network in Canada that have people
Willing to care for diabetics. Any info would
Be great fully appreciated :)

DCIN, aka Diabetic Cats in Need works across the border, in both the US and Canada. I believe they currently are at their limit on cats in foster care but do help cross post diabetic cats needing new homes. Venita & Ennis and Jennifer (and???) both work for DCIN and are members here. You could PM them.

The best way is to find a kind hearted soul at your shelter that is willing to learn about caring for a diabetic cat and will foster the cat. I did that for my local shelter here in Massachusetts. It really helps if the shelter is willing to provide insulin, test strips, meter, syringes and other supplies to the foster care giver.

It can be very hard to get a cat regulated in the shelter because nost shelters are not staffed long enough to give Lantus or Levimir every 12 hours as recommended. Also, the staffing at the shelter can be very different on the weekends and who knows when the cat will get their insulin.

Shelters also tend to have lots of tempting dry food around, high carb that the diabetic cat should not get. I know, it's tough.

It's extremely hard to find those type of people
In our community the last diabetic we had is in
My home after being in the shelter for 7 months.
Our shelter provides everything needed for the
Diabetic cats plus we only have 3 staff at the
Shelter me being one of them. I run our foster program
But find it extremely hard to find a person willing
To do everything that is needed.

Are you sure you don't want two extra sweet kitties in your home?

Another thought is to post a link in the Community forum. Do a write up on this other shelter diabetic kitty, and add a url link to that document in the post. The worst that can happen is no one fosters the kitty.

Where in Canada are you located? You've never added the location to your user control panel, profile, edit profile so it is impossible to tell. Maybe we could convince another member of the FDMB that lives close to you to take in this foster kitty. You never know until you try.
