Riley's been chewing at his nails on his foot with neuropathy and the neuropathy is not that bad anymore since methyl b12 but now around his 2 middle nails its really red and inflamed and it hurts him when i touch it.

Has this happened to anybody else's cat before. Is this something because of the neuropathy that maybe it's bothering him and he's chewing at it?

I'm going to make an appointment with the vet just to make sure because I know that he can't get another infection.

Neuropathy may cause tingling or pain in humans, so that could happen in cats. It also could be something else, so a vet exam is a good move.

Definitely a good move to go to the vets. Diabetics are much more vulnerable to infection so you need to keep on top of things. I'd get him in to the vet as soon as you can.

Riley was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in the bed of his toenails.

They gave me some antibiotic ointment to put on twice a day hoping that he will stop chewing on it, if not, he's going to have to wear a cone on his head.

The doctor said this could possibly be from the neuropathy but we hope not. He was very pleased with the way Riley looked he said he actually gained a pound which I thought he had lost a lot of weight I was almost worried about it, but he just lost fat and gained muscle.

I told him it was a lot of work to get him where he's at with the help from the feline diabetes message board. Riley is off insulin and he's also off his steroid and antibiotic for the IBD and it's all because he's eating soft food and not the dry food !

I did receive the budesonide but I have not had to use it. I also ordered the Fortiflora and some cellulose powder. Those will help keep his stool a little bit softer since the soft food kind of makes it really hard.

The vet said he has another vet that's working with him with more of holistic approach to medicine vs just Western medicine that he normally recommends.

He also told me that acupuncture can be another treatment for neuropathy that he did not know until recently so that's good to know

Thanks for updating us Dana. Fingers and paws crossed that the ointment will clear up the infection pronto.

Great that Riley has improved without the budesonide, too. And I like the sound of your vet! :)

Are you giving Riley B12 (methylcobalamin)? It's a great help for neuropathy.
.

Dana, if the fortiflora and cellulose don't help soften his stool, you can mix a couple of teaspoons of pumpkin purée into his food. Fortiflora didn't work for Marshmallow but I'm now using Animal Essentials Probiotics and Plant Enzymes and that seems to help, along with the pumpkin.

Sending healing vines for Riley's foot! Good deal on not having to use the Budesonide!!

Thank you so much I have been giving him the pure pumpkin and he only eats it when he's really really hungry but it's better than nothing I'm still waiting on the for the flora and actually the cellulose powder is really good for them.

Cellulose powder is similar to Metamucil accept it doesn't have sucrose in it like Metamucil even the plain kind has sucrose in it which drives me crazy and I don't understand that. I was giving him some miralax as well but it seem to make his tools really runny so it doesn't take much of that but it works in a different way it draws water into the colon or intestines versus just getting a extra fiber. I think the extra fiber is probably better for him in the long run.
