? Inexpensive food

Hi, my cat was diagnosed two days ago. We are starting the Lantis insulin. I have seen that fancy feast is really recommended because of the low carbohydrate content. I have Three cats and so they all really need to be on the same diet. The fancy feast at $.89 a can for all three of them each day is gonna cost a lot of money. Is there any other brand that is quality that maybe comes in a bigger can size that has low carbs and high protein that I could use and you have had good luck with?
Thank you for any advice. Also if it helps anyone at Walmart will sell Lantis as just one pen and it was only $22 with good RX.

Welcome to the best group you ever wanted to join . The members here helped me get Tyler into remission for over 3 years until he passed away from cancer. If it wasn't for that I know he would have stayed in remission.
You can try feeding Friskies Pates , the can are bigger. I'll give you the food chart so you can look.

The cans are 5.5 ounces cans
Keep asking questions :cat:

Thank you!!! I really appreciate it. I have read that some cats can go into remission and I'm gonna do everything I can to help that happen. Thank you for answering and your suggestion. I will look at that at Walmart today

You are very welcome :cat:

You can read all the yellow stickys here about Lantus

https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/lantus-levemir-biosimilars.9/

I hope you plan on home testing your kitty , it's the only way to keep your kitty safe .
While at Walmart you might want to pick a human meter
The Relion Premier Classic

Here is the link for the meter and test strips so you don't have to search for them. Most of us use human meters
Relion Premier Classic Meter at Walmart for 9 dollars
https://www.walmart.com/ip/ReliOn-Premier-CLASSIC-Blood-Glucose-Monitoring-System/552134103

The tests strips are 17.88 for 100
https://www.walmart.com/ip/ReliOn-Premier-Blood-Glucose-Test-Strips-100-Count/575088197
At least if you need more test strips you can run into Walmart and pick them up or if you're running low you can just order them from Walmart on line

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capillaries it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 10 or 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets any brand
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand not the lancing device
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
Look at the lancet under a light and you will see one side is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with

Try putting a thin layer of Vaseline on the ear so the blood will bead up

Here is a video one of our members made, just ignore when she has to code it, that's because she is using a pet meter ,with a human meter like the Relion no coding is needed
VIDEO: How to test your cat's blood sugar

Our numbers are based on human meters.
I know you only asked about food suggestions but I thought I'd give you some more information :cat:
@Deb D

If you are using the pen you can only adjust the dose by whole units . We use U-100 syringes with half unit markings so we can adjust the dose by 0.25 units at a time

Using syringes with a pen, cartridge, or vial:
  • U-100 3/10cc syringes with half unit markings are the best to use for drawing Lantus, Levemir, or the Biosimilars from vials, cartridges, and pens.
  • BD Ultra-Fine, CarePoint Vet, Monoject, GNP, UltiCare Vet Rx, Sure Comfort, and ReliOn are just some of the brands available with half unit markings.
  • Syringes come in 5/64 inch (6mm), ½ inch (8mm) or 5/16 inch (12.7mm) needle lengths. Needle gauges are 29, 30 or 31 (31 being the thinnest)
Walmart, you can get U100 insulin syringes with half unit marks for $12.58/100.
You need to go into the store to get them

Either of these 2 boxes are the ones you want (with a purple stripe). You have to go into the store , can't buy them on line

If you're going to Walmart, ask for Relion 3/10ml, 31 or 30 gauge insulin syringes. (Don't mention half unit marks because this tends to confuse them and they think you don't know what you want and will try to convince you that you need 1/2ml syringes---you DON'T)

ALL of the 3/10ml Relion syringes at Walmart have half unit marks. Trust me on this. You will want one of these boxes of syringes (the difference is the needle length...blue box are shorter needles than white box but both work fine). As long as the box has the purple stripe, they are the correct syringes.

Just take the cap off the pen and use a U100 syringes and pull the insulin out of the pen!

Thank you! I am going to get the different syringes today. My husband picked up the ones that are for the actual pen and I think they are too short. They are 5/32 length. I have read over everything and really appreciate all the information. I tried to get his glucose reading this morning from his ear, but wasn't able to get any blood. I'm gonna try the tips about warming first in an hour or so

Hi and Welcome to FDF, I have two cats both are very large cats 1 is 1/2 Main Coon, she weighs 18.5 lbs, Corky is a Tabby weighing in at 16.5lbs,
they are far from being overweight, perfect weight for their size, I also had to get Coco on the same food and Schedule as Corky, if you go to the Remarks on the Spreadsheet, you will see that I both feed them 4 cans a day, in another words, 1/2 can in each meal for each and 1 snack at +2
I purchase by the month at CHEWY.COM, no shipping charge get the supplies in 1-2 days and I auto ship, the dates for shipping can be changed and the foods can be changed every month, you cannot buy a single can, is by the case of 24, I narrowed down their favorite flavors, so I purchase 4 flavors every month that's 84 cans a month total , there is always left over cans and I also purchase Pretty Litter, it is $10.00 cheaper than Walmart , never mind Publix and the price per can is $0.81-$0.83 per can, is a game changer, and their customer service is 24-7 and over the top

Check the price on Friskies. They have low carb, pate style foods that are in large cans. The bigger cans cost less per ounce.

There are also some store brands that are low in carbs. Hopefully, someone who is familiar with those brands will stop by.

Most people buy the entire box of Lantus pens. There's a way to get the box for $35: https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/sourcing-insulin-more-economically.288053/ If a cat goes into remission, the unused pens are typically donated to another FDMB member or to an organization such as Diabetic Cats In Need.

Whatever low carb food you can afford and your cats will eat is fine :) Store generic brand is often similar to Fancy Feast. WalMart's Special Kitty is one. A new diabetic may need several 3 oz cans daily. You may want to look for a brand that is available in 5.5 oz cans or larger such as Friskies.
