Hello friends,

With the help of this website I have managed to get my cat Indy’s levels almost into the safe range… She went from having numbers consistently in the 400s to now between 150-250 almost every reading. In the past week, however, she has begun to decline rapidly and I have no idea what to do. Her levels haven’t changed, I keep testing her and she’s not been any higher or lower than normal. But her back legs are giving out, she can no longer jump, and the more worrisome symptom is that in the last few days she has become very weak and lethargic. She’s still eating and using the litter box as normal and she perks up every so often. She doesn’t seem distressed or agitated. But when I picked her up this morning she was alert but limp in my arms and it’s scary. One more piece of the puzzle is that her insulin is rather old… I haven’t been able to afford to replace it so I let it go a bit longer between orders than I normally do. Her new insulin should arrive tomorrow. My questions are… should I rush her to the vet, is there anything they can do for her that I haven’t already done, will the vet make me put her down, and do we think it could be a problem with her insulin and should I wait and see how she does with her new insulin once it arrives?

Thanks in advance for any help. My partner and I are preparing for the worst for our beloved girl. Our hearts are breaking. This has been the most difficult year

Your prozinc is fine as long as there are no clumps or floaties in it.

Diabetic cats are prone to peripheral neuropathy which affects their hind legs. Basically, they look like they are walking flat footed. It is treated with methylocobalamin b!@ (not cyanocobalamin B12).

However, this does not explain the limpness. If it were me, I would want a vet to run lab results to see what else is going on.

Can you tell us when you’re testing, as in, are these preshot numbers or mid cycle? Have you tested when she was lethargic? Are you also checking for ketones?

What dose is kitty on? Any chance you have a spreadsheet you can share with us? I’d be happy to help you get one started.

How old is kitty?

For the diabetic neuropathy
You can order this Methyl B-12 . I have used it for years and a lot of other members use this Methyl B-12 , just open up the capsule mix it in with the wet food add some water, it's tasteless.

The Zobaline is too expensive it's like 34.00 for 60 tablets
I used it Zobaline in the beginning but got too expensive and a member here told me about the Vitacost brand

https://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-vitamin-b-12-methylcobalamin-5000-mcg-100-capsules-6
14.49 for 100 capsules
Give one a day

Can you add what meter you are using to your signature ,human or pet meter?
Tap in your name up top and then tap signature add the meter and tap save
I agree with what Red said and also Sienne

I agree. Take her to the vet. The leg issues could well be diabetic neuropathy which can be dealt with.
I am more concerned with the lethargy as Sienne is. Get the vet to test for ketones in the urine or blood.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful responses. I am at work right now but will get all the info you all have asked for as soon as I get home. I would like to get Indy into the vet as soon as possible, but I don’t have the money today. As soon as I am able, that is on the agenda as I agree a vet visit is in order. Unfortunately my finances are not in a good place right now, as I have spent thousands of dollars unexpectedly this year on her diagnosis. I know you all understand the struggle of the expenses we accrue due to the disease! I feel terrible but I chose to get her new insulin and now don’t have any extra money for probably two weeks. I am hoping against hope that I can manage her symptoms until then. Will post again as soon as I’m home, thanks again so much everyone.

How is her appetite? Is she eating, drinking ok? Going to the litter box ok? There are other potential issues, not diabetes specific that come to my mind which really can only be diagnosed with a vet visit and blood work. If you find her current symptoms don’t improve and/or other symptoms come up, and things worsen; if she doesn’t want to eat or has issues going to the litter box it would be best to have a vet check her out to determine what is going on.
