My father is dying and I'm making multiple trips out of town. I can, in theory, take Chester with me to my hometown - both my mom and my sister are willing to open up a spare room for him. I will not be able to take him to Mackinac Island with me when it's time for the actual funeral. My grandmother doesn't have a spare room and the one or two hotels open at this time of year don't allow pets. Not sure how to make this all work.

Anyone with suggestions? Is there anyone who could help out?
Thank you.

I'll try and get a hold of Sarah/Velcro....she lives in Lansing and is the one who flew round trip back in Oct. to get MC for me and then kept her overnight.

I'm so sorry for you during this hard time.

But I do want to say that I wouldn't think twice about sneaking your kitty into a hotel. I drove from NYC to LA and back a few years ago with my then 19-year old Fred in the car and we snuck into many a hotel--with subQ fluids even-(pain in the ass to lug all his supplies, but I did what I had to do)

I just recently snuck 2 cats into a hotel in Ithaca NY. Cats are harder to detect than a dog. You just have to be careful with the carrying in and out, make sure the cat doesn't meow if you're on the elevator with a cleaning lady or something.

Also, in respect for allergic people, one thing I do do is put towels on the chair in the hotel room, so if kitty sits on it, it won't get allergens on there (although trutfhully, our cats on their appropriate diets should not be making others allergic because they themselves are not having allergic reactions). Also if you bring his kitty bed, if he has one, he would prefer to sit on that anyway.

My Fred was Burmese--so a loud meower--when I would leave the hotel room I would turn on CNN quite loud so that if anyone walking by heard him it would be muffled by news!

I recently bought this great litter box at Petco that was perfect for the car and the hotel room. It had a hole ON TOP...and therefore a lot less spillage of litter...and also in the car, no fear of tipping it over and you could strap it into the seatbelt in the back seat.... IT was actually this one of the right in the photo on this link: http://www.thehappylitterbox.com/2011/0 ... itter-box/

So the only thing you have to do is make sure you clean up the litter after you leave. So make sure to put it into the bathroom where there is tile, not carpet. And this top entry litter box leaves very little spillage. Make sure to bring a scooper and also one of those teeny little dustpan/brush sets so you can quickly/easily clean up spilled litter.

If you get caught for some reason, then just say you have an elderly diabetic special needs cat...the worst they will do is fine you. I think what they are worried about is destruction by an animal--peeing all over the place, loud barking, etc.

good luck.

Hello! I live in Haslett MI so very close to you. I would be happy to help. Send me a PM.

I'm sure I can get a few references around here and in Real life.

My thoughts are with you and your family (((hugs)))

My father passed away this morning. I don't know what the arrangements are yet. I don't think anyone knows what the arrangements are yet. I'll be in touch when I know more about where I'll be when.

Thank you all for your help and support.

I am so sorry for your loss .. I just want you to know that Sarah first came to us when mocha was diagnosed and showed us how to treat her and she was wonderful .. I know she will take great care of your kitty if you need her ...

Thank you to Sarah and Jackie'sMom. My mother has decided to pay for boarding Chester for the trip. I've agreed that it's probably less stress on everyone at this point. He doesn't like car rides and the five hours from Indy to Lansing would probably be MORE than enough for him...So he gets to stay at a kitty hotel for a while. Thank you all for the offers of help.

Thank you also for the kind words and warm thoughts. This is a rough time and I'm glad to have found such wonderful people.
Chester says "Hi!" (tiny meow)
