Hi, I am new to this board, cat newly diagnosed (Aug 5th) put on Lantus, testing at home, posted on health board that Putter's #'s are still very high (500's to 600's) he started off on 2 u BID (16lb kitty), he stayed on that dose for 2 weeks, recently went up to 3 u BID over weekend, still high #'s, showing definate signs hyper signs such as starting to walk more on his hocks, eating like he is starving, pu/pd. I am thinking rebounding, but vet moved his dose to 4 u to start tonigh, I gave him his dose but I am not comfortable at all with this dose after reading everyones post about too much lantus.
I am giving him fluids as his bun was elevated a few days ago, seems to help him feel better. I work with the vet so he knows how I feel about the increase. I have Putter's hypo kit ready just in case. I am thinking that I am not going to shoot 4 u or even 3u in the morning, I will pre-test him right before I give his insulin.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh he is now not free fed, he eats only raw and canned, all low glycemic foods. Just started the switch to raw and to my surprise he loves it.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Putter and Putter's bean! (sorry, I don't know your name hehe) Welcome! I can't offer you advice, as I haven't been here long enough myself, but did want to stop by and say hello. This is the best place for you to be, and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer your questions.

Welcome to Lantus Land.

Please read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board. They will help you to get oriented to posting conventions, our dosing protocol, and many of the key concepts that are important to using Lantus.

If you look at the dosing protocol, you'll see that we increase Lantus in increments of 0.25 - 0.50u. It is easy to miss an optimal dose by increasing in large amounts. It also helps to have syringes that are marked in half-unit increments, if you don't already have these. As you were noting, there is a possibility that with increasing in large amounts, Putter could potentially be in a chronic rebound situation. However, some bouncing is to be expected.

Most importantly, it will be extremely useful if you can put together a spreadsheet (SS). If you follow the spreadsheet instructions in Tech Support, it will walk you through the steps for linking the SS to your signature. We are very numbers driven on this Board so a SS is really essential. Likewise, if you could complete a Profile, it will give us information about Putter's medical history, what you're feeding, etc. and we won't keep asking you the same questions, repeatedly.

sienne has already given you basic information so i won't repeat. just wanted to stop by to say hello and welcome to the group! :-D
