Increase dose? Not sure!!!

welcome to Lantus Land!

Will you be able to get more spot checks at different times of the cycle any time soon? Right now there isn't enough data to know when Joey's nadir is or how low he is going. It is important to know when your cat's onset, nadir, and duration usually are.

I would hold off until you can get some different spot checks. In the meantime, please read through our stickies if you haven't already, especially the Tight Regulation Protocol and New to the Group stickies. This post about the importance of nadirs is relevant too.

Thank you!!! I work 8-4 Mon thru Fri so until I can get more tests in this weeknd i will hold Joey"s doses at 2 units.

One more question? How long after his can of FF should I wait to test him to get a true number and not a food spike? Is it 2 hours? He's fed about 4-5 cans a day. I'm trying to keep him on a feeding schedule.

Thank you!!!

Welcome Tara.

It looks like you've been posting over on Health. I briefly glanced at some of your threads and I didn't quite catch of anyone had directed you to the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Lantus board. They will help you get you grounded in how we approach dosing as well as how to maximize your use of this forum and get you up to speed on what you need to know about Lantus.

We really encourage you to get at least one test per cycle in addition to your AMPS and PMPS tests. It looks to me like you're out of the house during the week. If you can grab a test before you're out the door and/or when you're in the door, if at all possible, that would be great. Likewise, at minimum, a before bed test every night will help you to make good decisions about dose. Lantus dosing is based on the nadir, not on your pre-shot values.

What I'd like to suggest is that you hold the dose tonight and get a test or two in this evening. While I think Joey may need an increase, I'm not entirely comfortable suggesting that you increase his dose given that you've been skipping PM spot checks. Many cats experience lower numbers at night and, providing that Joey doesn't have a history of ketones, I would rather see some tests tonight and then have you raise his dose by 0.25u.

Cats really vary with when the best time to test is. Typically, your +1 number will reflect a food spike. Your +2 should be about the same as your pre-shot. However, not all cats follow the rules. If numbers start to drop early, it usually means it's going to be an active cycle. You can look at Gabby's SS. She's known for fast, early drops. (This is why I test early in the cycle. I got really tired of being surprised!)

There's a description of what an ideal curve should look like in the "New to the Group" sticky.
