Inappropriate Urination

I have 2 sisters, Margaret and Julia, both almost 12 yrs old. Margaret is my diabetic. For the first time since we've had them and we got them when they were 8 weeks old, a cat went somewhere outside of the litter box. The box (a big one) is in the master bath and has been for almost 7 years. Just tonight, one cat and we don't know who, went beside the toilet in the other bathroom. It was yellowish but clear. I remember years ago our old cat did that but it had a tinge of blood. We went right to the vet and he had an infection. Apparently it was his way of telling us. My issue is two-fold. Money is realllllly tight right now and I can't really afford the vet and even if I could, I don't know who should go. Margaret has been OTJ since July 2009 and her BG tonight was 72. Julia (civvie) was 94. I was hoping that would tell me something. I'm not sure what I can do. Obviously I want to take care of it and makes sure no one is ill. Neither one is acting any differently. It may (and I strongly say may) have happened before the box was cleaned this afternoon but I can't be sure. Do I act on this one incident or take a wait and see approach? Any help is appreciated.

As long as everyone is eating and drinking and peeing and pooping, I would think you could wait and watch carefully. See if it happens again and if so, try to find out who.

And be really diligent on cleaning out the litterbox. You wouldn't like to use a dirty toilet, right?
Scooping daily both helps keep odor down and fastidious cats using the box.

General notes you may already know:
The recommended number of litterboxes = # of cats + 1.
Recommended size is 1.5 times the length of the longest cat.
An open top is preferred by most cats.
If you have a cat that kicks out litter, get a large clear plastic storage tub to use and cut a hole in an end to permit entry.
Expected amount of wet litter per cat per day is approximately 1/2 cup (adjusted for size); a change to wet food will increase that somewhat and illness may increase it drastically (renal disease, diabetes, etc).

Hi Elizabeth, and, of course, you too or, make that two, precious Margaret and Julia,

My humble suggestion is to put another litter box in the other bathroom. And then, wait and see...

Of course, there is the due litter box diligence deal... Sigh...

Love and hope it all works out for the best kind of hugs for you, Margaret and Julia,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: Please keep us posted, okay?

Thanks everyone. All of our litter stuff for both girls is in the master bathroom where there is a LOT of room for them to do what they need to do. It hasn't happened again and what I'm thinking may have happened is that the bedroom door was closed. To access their bathroom :-D you have to go through the master bedroom. Julia tries to help Mom make the bed and sometimes it's easier to close the door and make the bed in half the time rather then have her help. Otherwise the door is always open for them to come and go. If they couldn't get to their bathroom they may have done the next best thing and used the other bathroom. There isn't really room in there to have a litter box otherwise we would put one there. It would probably be okay if it was just us and we were used to it. However, when we have company it would have to be moved and that may confuse the cats which we don't want. We're still keeping an eye on them but I think it will be fine. Julia just claimed an empty box from Amazon a few minutes ago and Margaret is headed for the couch. Oh the difficult life of a cat.

Hi Elizabeth, and, of course you two, Margaret and Julia,

Don't you just love it when a cat tries to help you make the bed?!?!?!

I'm so glad you posted this update because it sounds like everything is and will be okay.

We love okay!

Love and hugs for you and your furry girls,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: I firmly plan on being a cat in my next life...
