We have been having some problems with inappropriate urination over the last two months.
This will be long, as I want to be thorough!
We have two cats - the sugar kitty Faraday (10M), and our civvie (4F). They have a tumultuous relationship, alternating between all out war and loving snuggles, sometimes within the same day. Faraday has well controlled diabetes and pretty good BG numbers unless he gets into contraband.
The start of it coincided with our annual vet visits. Both cats had clean bills of health, though they noted Faraday had slightly dilute urine.
I do push water on the cats, adding several Tbs to their meals (4 mini meals of Friskies pate a day). I assumed that was why.
We strongly suspect Faraday is the only pee-er. He has been caught peeing outside the box, and will also sometimes pee when they fight in the heat of things.
What we have tried:
1. Separating litter boxes.
They used to be in the same (laundry) room, but we were worried they were getting territorial and moved one into the room where the bulk of the inappropriate urination was happening in. This did not seem to make a difference.
2. Feliway
This was in case it was some escalation of tensions that was causing this. We tried it for a month (which the scientific literature told us was about the time it took to see results, with little change after that time). This also seemed to make no difference.
I’m a little stumped as to what to try next. My partner wants to get rid of cat(s), as his stuff gets targeted a fair bit. I obviously want to avoid this. Their recent clean bills of health seem to rule out health-based reasons.
We clean up problem areas with Nature’s Miracle - their urine destroyer and extra strength cat formulas. Targets are one couch in particular and then things left on the floor or particularly “messy” areas. I clean until I can’t smell the urine anymore, and then once more. COVID left me with a slightly diminished sense of smell, so I can’t be 100% that I’m being as thorough as needed.
My current thought is to cut back on water (stop supplementing their pates), but I’m obviously skeptical that that will help as I’m feeling rather defeated.
Any ideas, oh wise FDMB friends?
