Buggy is finally back into remission but his urine is showing some white cells & his Ph is still up for the second check in a row so my vet wants me to try Hill's metabolic & urinary wet food. He gave me some samples but I am sure it is going to be expensive. We live in a rural area but does anyone have any suggestions as to what commercial cat food might be safe to try? I have been spent the morning looking at the lists suggested by this group but they are abit old so I am hesitant to go by them & abit overwhelmed too. I am just wondering what other cat owners are feeding their cats who are like Buggy....

Thank you very much!!!

Hi Karen,

Is it correct to assume that you haven't changed Buggy's food during the period you've been testing his urine? Can you let us know what the pH was before and what it is now? Also does Buggy have any known kidney issues?

When you say that his urine is showing some white cells, is that the leucocytes test on a human urinalysis strip you're looking at?
.

I've never used this, so please check with a vet and with others on this forum before trying it, but I have read that DL-Methionine supplementation can acidify the urine, and then you wouldn't have to change whatever food Buggy is normally on. However, my understanding is that you have to be super careful to not make it too acidic b/c overdoing it could, in turn, cause other problems (e.g., oxalate crystals).

Buggy has been on Fancy Feast for at least 18 months and before that he was on Hill's metabolic wet food but he started to refuse to eat that so that is when I switched him to FF to get him to eat. My Vet is the one who has tested his urine. We haven't been able to do it at home due to the way our home is set up and my husband isn't behind me with doing much with Buggy at home. He is already uptight that Buggy will stop eating the Hill's food again but we can handle it for awhile if it will help and if I can find something else that will work.

The Vet was using a strip for the test & he has not had any kidney problems or anything so far other then the diabetes. He has 2 sisters and one at 9 lbs and health and the other one at 13lbs and on Hill's C/D for crystals in her urine.
