Hi Everyone,

It's been a couple days since I've been on. Stress is getting to
me and I had to go back to work today. Spent the whole day worried about Tigress.

Just a reminder. Tigress was DX 3/31/12. She's been on 1u of Lantus BID. I've only been able to get two successful BG test the first being on 4/3 at 478 the second being 4/7 at 351. My Vet prescribed the hills w/d dry food. It's what Tigress has been eating since 3/31. But I can't get it out of my head that it's the wrong diet for her! And my
Vet is just frustrating me! I decided to make the switch to wet food tonight. Doing Fancy Feast from the lists since its easily
Found at any store, no I never have to worry about running out of food and not being able to get her more. Plus it's affordable. So I'm hoping you guys can help me out once more. She needs to lose some weight so I was thinking of giving her one 3oz can onthe morning and one 3oz can at night. Is that enough food? She's currently 14lbs and doc wants her to lose 2-bs. Also how long can wet food stay out? She's never been one to eat all her food in one sitting. Also how can I avoid hypo episodes while I'm stuck at work all day. I know food. Any be left out for hours on end, should I maybe supplement the prescription dry food for the daytime while I'm at work until she's either eating all in one sitting or is regulated? Also I took a chance and ordered this stuff called Dia-Ionix. Anybody have any experience with it? I want to do everything to help my baby get well, even if it mean adding homeopathic remedies as well.

Also a side note or the bg test. I finally picked up some 28g lancets, hopefully
That helps with the blood draw. Everyone was right, I was using to small of a gauge. The 33g that came with the meter. Hopefully the 28g works better.

Re: I'm switching to wet food...questions!

Hi Mina,

You are absolutely right that any dry food is the wrong diet for a diabetic. I have 16 cats here currently 13 of my own, and a foster momma cat and her two kittens. Everyone here eats pretty much the same thing, since 2 of my personal cats are also diabetic. Musette my insulin dependent girl is also fed FF classics because she is highly carb sensitive. Musette I feed 2 cans of FF spread out over 4 feedings, but Maxwell my diabetic guy that is in remission eats Friskies so I need to kind of do the math on his diet for you, since Musette is only a 8lb girl while Maxwell is a lean 17lbs. With Maxwell he eats 1 1/2 cans of Friskies which would work out to about 3 cans of FF if that was what he was eating. But since you want Tigeress to loss weight you could start her out on 2 cans a day and see how she does.

As far as leaving food out for hours on end, what we do here when we need to be away for several hours is I freeze their meals and put them out frozen for them so they can nibble on it as it thaws. To give you an example, if I know I'm going to be gone all day and be around to give them their normal "lunch" I freeze the Lunch portion the night before, then I put out their Breakfast fresh with their frozen lunch portion, that way they can eat right away and then nibble on the frozen stuff as it thaws out.

Others use timed feeders but with my large furry family there is no way I could set that many feeders and be sure that the right cat got the right food. But by mixing a little bit of water into the food and freezing it everyone gets to eat when they want to.

Collecting test data when you can will help you know when its safe to shoot and about how low she is likely to go.

A timed feeder, to space her meals out, will help keep her from being too hungy during the 12 hour cycle ,if you need to reduce her intake. Cat Info has information on healthy nutrition and how to safely reduce calories. Dropping the food intake too fast can result in hepatic lipidosis, where fat breakdown overloads the liver and can shut it down.
