I so feel like dancing_cat dancing_cat here....we are in the Blues and way under the renal threshhold... flip_cat

Oh what a difference a different cartridge of insulin makes!!!! Now granted I'm still waiting on her new, new stuff to arrive, and yes, this cartridge was opened way back last October when I adopted Maxwell, but it only had 2 shots out of it, and since the one that came with her I was pretty sure was not working the way it should have, I decided last night to just throw a lawn dart and try Maxwell's leftovers. And couldn't be happier that I did.

One of those live and learn moments. Since Maxwell went OTJ so quickly I didn't have a lot of experience with how Lantus was suppose to look, but when I started comparing Musette's pen with Maxwell's cartridge they were very different. I've always had trouble getting air bubbles out of the syringe with Musette's and even getting it to draw into the syringe, it was just plain for lack of a better word...thick. Maxwell's last night was so easy to fill the syringe and the air cleared easily as well. So I have to think that her higher numbers and even all her bouncing around was because that insulin was just defective from the get go. I suspose it can happen that one slips through the cracks and goes out bad, figuring humans use it so quickly that it won't really matter much....don't know for sure, just happy she is now headed in the right direction.

Either that or Mickey had a little chat with her about how much happier mommies are when you give them blue and green numbers rather than pink and yellow...lol

Those numbers are a lovely shade of blue!

I doubt the manufacturer "let one slip through" that was defective. They could be held liable for all sorts of stuff doing that 'cause we are talking medications for humans not a pair of knock-off jeans. It most likely got either mishandled along the way or was over heated, or frozen or something. I am very leery of ordering insulin in either the hottest or coldest months for those reasons.

Well it was in the hands of the USPS for awhile, and until Marcy mentioned it....There was a delay in the 'express' shipping getting it to her place, so Lord only knows what they did with it for the 48 hours they had it. Maxwell's stuff was shipped Fedex in October and it was a very mild year then and it has been stored in our frig ever since. I haven't filled it into her spread sheet yet but her +9 was only 223...Okay so we are back to yellow, but still so much better than what I've seen for the last few days.

Another reason I don't order insulin at all. I know most people have good luck with it and the pharmacy could screw up too in handling, but I think the odds are better if I have the insulin handed to me cold.

Sorry to be a spoil sport on this. I know it's more affordable to order it from Canada, but as important as insulin is, I decided not to take chances and pay a little extra.

Oh, glad to see Musette is doing so well! Just be aware Maxwell's "old" pen might work too well for her! LOL

Well since Musette is a DCIN cat her insulin comes through them, which I'm grateful for since the budget is tight right now, but it also means I don't have control of where it comes from either. The budget shouldn't be this tight this time of year, considering Jon is getting an incredible amount of hours in right now, but after having to drag 10 cats into the vet's after they all decide that they couldn't eat and starting having pudding poo, I now should own part of the vet clinic...lol. Especially since they found nothing wrong with any of them. Then I take them all off Friskies, put them on Special Kitty and they start eating again and the poop issues resolved themselves...<sigh> Cats! if its not one thing with them then it is another.

I'm kind of hoping Maxwell's old pen will have the same magical charm on it to work for her like it worked for him...lol. I would just so hate to have 2 OTJ cats by the end of summer. So far we are off to a good start, even though this morning was still in the yellow, it was still below the renal threshold at 238, so she is starting off today better than yesterday. Which at this point in the dance all I can really ask for, if each day she gets a little better numbers than the day before then we are headed in the right direction.

The other thing that I think is helping as well is that she is getting a little more and more relaxed that she is finally home, no one is going to put her in a carrier and send her away again. Also she is slowly learning that here she can just be her own kitty. No one is going to bully her, when she has had enough of sitting on a lap or being cuddled she doesn't have to slap or bite, she can just get down and go about her kitty business. That she can play when she wants to play and sleep when she wants to sleep. I don't think she has had that in awhile if ever.

Oh for you all and especially for Auntie Marcy...here are a couple of new pictures that I got a couple nights ago. If you look closely you can see her tortie marking on her back starting to come in as she gets her fur back...Man, she is going to be one stunning girl when its all grown back in.

Oh, I forgot about getting the insulin from DCIN. OK, I'll shut up now..... :?

Thanks for the pictures!! Maybe it's because her head looks twice as big as her body but Musette IS tiny! But adorable. Oh my goodness. I just want to scoop her up.

That's a great way to look at it! And Maxwell looks a little like a lighter version of Sheila's Jeddie. Lady Jane Grey looks older than 9 months, maybe it's the way she's sitting there. She has a presence which befits her name!

I honestly don't know how old Lady Jane Grey is, when we first got her I thought she was a full grown cat, and had already been spayed, but....you know there is always a but....She just went into her first heat cycle since she has been here about a month ago, and she has at least doubled in size. Right now she has that lanky, leggy build like a 'teenager' so we are guessing she is somewhere between 8-10 months old. She is every bit as tall and long as Lord Maxwell, so she should fill out to be a big girl, especially once I can get her in to be spayed.

And yes Musette IS a tiny thing, not much bigger than a loaf of bread...but oh so cute and now so cuddly. Last night I had her under one arm, Lady Jane under the other and Maxwell on the pillow above my head while we watched Harry Potter on the T.V. in the bedroom, talk about being purred into sleep...lol. I keep telling Musette she isn't tiny...she's fun size...lol

Musette is so darn cute!! I can't wait to see her when her beautiful fur has grown in. She'll be stunning.
Max is as handsome as ever and it's so nice to see the elegant Lady Jane Gray. I would love to see pictures of your entire fur gang but especially of the sh*tten and the drooler.

This video has pictures of Mel's gang. The photos start around 2 minutes into the video. The kitty labeled as "Nimbus" is actually Lady Jane Grey. Nimbus was her name when I did this video for Mel.

This was posted back in February but I thought she might like it posted here for you guys - so you can see her kitty family. :-D

Thanks CD....If Musette keeps it up, I'll be needing your talents again before the year is out. :-D

Carolyn! Hi, how are you? That video is wonderful and funny!

FYI everyone, Carolyn formatted the Lev stickies for us. I still refer to the PZI/Lev graph she made to show people the difference between shorter and longer acting insulins.

Great video!

Mel, you have two cats that look like Beau (Amon Ra and Bert) and Max does look like Jeddie. Has his fur grown back all the way yet? Is he part Maine Coon? I can't remember if you mentioned it or not. Jeddie is part MC.

It is really pretty amazing to watch these "discarded" FDs blossom in a good home. I can't wait to see Musette in full fur. When I got Jeddie his tail was scraggly, he had no ruff, just two patches that stuck out at his cheeks and his belly was pretty bare (from chewing/over-grooming) and he was really skinny - about 8.5lbs. It took over a year for his fur to completely fill out, but his tail is very full, his ruff is long and his belly fur is curly! And he has probably gained 3.5 lbs - at least, I haven't weighed him recently.

Sheila,

I was thinking the same thing when I saw your Jeddie and Beau that they looked like Maxwell and Bert. Amon Ra is actually a lynx-point applehead siamese. Bert is definitely part Siamese but his mom was a stray hussie that showed up at our door, just long enough to present us with Bert and Casper...yeah both the blue-point and the flame point are full brothers...lol.

Not completely sure what Maxwell is, he definitely has the size to be part Maine Coon, but his summer coat at least is only a single coat, but if I remember correctly MCs and Wegies both are single coats in the summer and double coats in the winter, so time will tell what his coat does this year when the weather turns cold. But I suspect there is some Maine Coon in his lineage somewhere. He has the fur between the toes, the ear turfs and lion mane. He was so thin and shaved last year I never really got to see what he looked like before he was nekkid. I do know he has gotten so much deeper orange this year. When he first came here he was 10.5lbs and a walking skeleton, and I thought buff and white. Now he is definitely Orange & White, with a plume for a tail at a healthy 17lbs.

Your right it is amazing to watch the cast off FDs just bloom under the right care. I'm dying to see what Musette is going to look like 8 months from now when she sheds out her lion cut and gets her full coat back in, as I can see the starting of lots of peach and smokey blue patches on her legs and back. She is definitely a dilute tortie point, but how much tortie is in her marking remains to be seen.
