My husband and I have a beloved 7 year old neutered male, "Pricey," who always ate kibbles. Following two surgeries for infections from fights, the vet gave him steroids for pain. She also got lab work which showed diabetes with BG in the 600's. Doctor put him on Pro Plan DM, started him on 3.5 U Lantus and increased to 4.5 with numbers in 300's and 400's. He wore four sensors, each lasting about 5 days. Vet said to contact her in 2-3 months to discuss his condition!

I contacted a second vet who gave me the name of this group and we learned to test at home.

Following advice from many of you, Pricey is eating only FF and Beyond Cod and Spinach (his very favorite). No more high carbs! He was on 3.5 U of generic Lantus insulin two weeks ago and quickly went to 2.5. His BG has dropped from 200's to as low as 61. Last night he dropped low enough that a lady in this group advised us to not give insulin but instead test, stall, test this morning. His first BG was 136, after stall 122, 2 1/2 hrs. later 84. It appears his pancreas is working! Such a HUGE relief!! He has had no insulin today, and we will be testing him frequently.

If numbers change, I will be asking for help. We are new at this and have much to learn! Thank you all for your willingness to be here for those of us who need help and cannot find it elsewhere.

There's no reason you need to test too much today but it's good to gather data. I'd suggest you wait and test him at +11.5 so that gives you 30 minutes to get some advice on what to do at shot time tonight. You'll still test again at shot time (PMPS) just to make sure he's safe to give insulin to at all (if he gets high enough)
 
Pricey's BG was low enough Friday evening (101) that we did not give insulin. His BG has been in normal range for the past three days and we've given no insulin. It appears he is in REMISSION thanks to all the help from you folks.....a special thank you to Chris who took me step by step through this!!!

Pricey is drinking much less, less hungry, happy, purring, playing, eating better (with coaxing) He still would prefer his kibbles but no more of that! Tonight I added some cooked chicken and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese to his FF. He ate with no coaxing!
Thanks so much to you all for your encouragements and suggestions. Remission is a huge relief, as you all know!
 
Yes, the vet who told us about your group had gotten the information from a client who told her connecting with Feline Diabetes on FB would benefit me. The vet practiced traditionally for many years but now is "holistic" and is open to other options of treatment. She does not live nearby so we emailed back and forth, she tested his hair and she sent us a some herbs and a liver flush she thought would help.
