I'm driving my vet crazy!

My vet has decided that she should get hazardous duty pay for dealing with me. I can't bring myself to follow her directions. I gave Oliver 1U of Lantus this morning and his BG went down to 61 at +8. It is now back up to a pre-injection reading of 148. My vet told me to give him the insulin if his BG was above 75, but I can't bring myself to do it. His BG tends to spike over night, but I think that is because I give him prednisolone at night. I am going to skip the pred tonight to see if it has an impact. I'll give it to him in the morning so I can see if there is a spike during the day.

I know I should follow my vet's instructions, but I am all alone here and have no one to help me (or even give me moral support) if he goes hypo.

If 1 unit of Lantus drops him into the 60s on the first dose, the dose is likely too high. I say that because the effects of Lantus build up over the 1st 5 days and strengthen. Perhaps drop the dose to 0.5 units and test around +5 to +7 hours after the shot to see how low that takes him.

We advise new folks not to shoot below 200 until you have data showing it is safe.

This isn't his first day on Lantus. I have been giving him injections for 10 days now. I started out at 2 U and am now down to 1U every 12 hours. However, for the last couple of days, I have not given him his 2nd injection because his pre-injection number was below 200.

Ah - I was on my phone which doesn't always let me see the spreadsheets.

You want a dose you can give safely twice a day, so it seems the current dose is too high. You might try dropping it by units (we eyeball quarter units here, or use callipers)
